M67 from Clark Way

Viewed from Clark Way looking west towards Manchester. The M67 was conceived as a motorway link from Manchester to Sheffield but the only parts that were built were the Hyde and Denton bypasses opened in the late 1970s. Prior to the motorway the view here would have been of George Street with terraced housing, several pubs and two churches.

Cyclists on the Trans Pennine Trail

Two cyclists on the National Cyclist Network Route #62 approach Stockport Road bridge and the turn off to Osborne Road.

This section is along the line of the former Apethorn to Godley Junction railway.

Following persistant wet weather, the bridlepath on the left, part of the Trans Pennine trail, is like a quagmire and filled with deep puddles that reflect the winter trees.

Under Knott Fold Bridge

Following on from last week's photograph New Year's Day on the Trans Pennine Trail we now look under Knott Fold Bridge.

On the left horses have to negotiate a small jump and then move across to the right hand side of the track.

The track is barred by a gate which is locked but can be used by council vehicles that service the trail from time to time.

Walkers and cyclists must use the squeeze stile on the right.

Ahead is the bridge under Dowson Road (the one with the big puddle).

New Year's Day on the Trans Pennine Trail

Looking past the Foxholes oak tree towards Knott Fold Bridge on the former Godley Junction to Apethorn railway line, now part of the Trans Pennine Trail and National Cycle Route #62. Taken just before noon on New Year's Day 2013.

Another Day, Another Dog

Hyde Daily Photo of the Year 2012 featured a dog and the puddle under Dowson Road bridge over the the former Godley Junction to Apethorn railway whose route is followed by the Trans Pennine Trail and National Cycle Route #62.

That was taken in June. This was taken shortly after midday on New Year's Day 2013 from the other direction. The puddle is still there but this dog has sensibly walked around it and is waiting for his mistress to catch up.

On Hyde DP Xtra see how it looked from the other side of the bridge a week earlier on Christmas Day.

Grey autumn on the Trans Pennine Trail

Through my neck of the woods the Trans Pennine Trail, a long distance walking route, and the National Cycle Network Route #62 from Southport to Hornsea follow the line of the former Godley Junction to Apethorn railway.

Here, looking towards the Stockport Road bridge, the leaf-strewn quagmire on the left is the bridlepath for horse riders, whilst the tarmacced foot/cyclepath is on the right.

See how it looked in July 2006.

Weekend Reflections at Dunkirk Bridge

Dunkirk Lane crosses bridge #4 on the Peak Forest Canal.

The Peak Forest Canal runs for 15 miles between Ashton under Lyne and Whaley Bridge. It was built to link the Ashton Canal with the tramways that brought limestone from the Peak District quarries.

Singing In The Rain

"Brelli" in hand, this man is taking a rainy day stroll on Spectacle Island . . . I can help but think of that song that Gene Kelly made famous.  Long Island Bridge in Quincy Bay can just barely be seen through the fog.

Fisherman by Bridge #5

The Peak Forest Canal runs for 15 miles between Ashton under Lyne and Whaley Bridge. It was built to link the Ashton Canal with the tramways that brought limestone from the Peak District quarries.

At bridge #5 the canal passes under Nursery Road and the M67 motorway. The fisherman is using live maggots as bait and looking for pike and roach.

See him from the opposite direction on Hyde DP Xtra.

The man on the spiral footbridge

Looking over the M67 motorway towards the spiral footbridge. There is a man to be seen halfway across.

How did it get on to it?

For the answer, visit Hyde DP Xtra.

Do I have to walk through the water?

After all the recent rain there is a huge puddle under the Dowson Road bridge over the TransPennine Trail.

I passed by a woman walking her dogs and when I turned round I saw the youngest dog looking up at its mistress.

Did she pick it up or did it get its feet wet?

See the answer on Hyde DP Xtra.

A different view of Captain Clarke's Bridge

Views of Captain Clarke's bridge over the Peak Forest Canal are usually taken from the South where it's design is more evident, or from the towpath if looking North.

This photograph was taken more than two years ago by Tom Wigley who had crossed over to the other bank in order to photograph a lost memorial to members of the St George's Sunday School Rowing Club who had lost their lives in the Second World War.

Those photographs can be seen on Old Hyde.

Dowson Road Bridge & A Fallen Tree

Looking towards Dowson Road bridge on the TransPennine Trail.

A tree has fallen (or was it pushed?) and it blocks the bridlepath part of the trail. Maybe it is something new for the horses to jump over. This was a few weeks ago and it was still there a week later. It may have gone by now. I'll take a look sometime when this weather improves. It's more like March than May.

You can see it from the opposite direction on Hyde DP Xtra.

Sunday Bridges: Great Norbury Street Railway Bridge

This view is from the steps leading up to the Manchester-bound platform of Hyde Central Station where from the top of the bridge you'll get a view of the town.

I showed you the bridge from the other side of Great Norbury Street in January 2011.

Mellow Yellow Monday: Manchester Road from Hyde Central Station

I'm not sure if the paintwork on the inside of the bridge is yellow or not but it is certainly yellowing.

The yellow building on the left is "Cartridge World" and on the right between "KwikFit" and "B&Q" can be seen "Topps Tiles".

CDPB April Theme: Cobblestones

A look down the side the Manchester Road bridge over the Peak Forest Canal. The roving bridge which is Grade II listed was built to allow horses pulling boats to change sides without being unhitched when the towpath moved from one side to the other. For another view of this bridge and a fuller explanation of the term "roving bridge" see my post from December 2008.

The City Daily Photo portal is now back up and running. The theme day for April has been extended. Click here to view thumbnails for all participants.
