M67 from Clark Way

Viewed from Clark Way looking west towards Manchester. The M67 was conceived as a motorway link from Manchester to Sheffield but the only parts that were built were the Hyde and Denton bypasses opened in the late 1970s. Prior to the motorway the view here would have been of George Street with terraced housing, several pubs and two churches.

The man on the spiral footbridge

Looking over the M67 motorway towards the spiral footbridge. There is a man to be seen halfway across.

Blue Monday: Sliproad to the M67

Just around the corner from yesterday's shadow shot is the slip road to the M67 motorway.

As detailed on the Motorway Archive website, the "Hyde by-pass" was opened in 1978 and the "Denton relief-road" in 1981. It is in fact all that remains of a plan for a motorway over the Pennines from Manchester to Sheffield as detailed on the Pathetic Motorway website.

It is a five-mile long motorway that some say tore the heart out of Hyde and Denton. The loss of George Street seems be especially lamented but it's all before my time in Hyde.

Motorway signs in the UK are blue so today's post is a contribution to Blue Monday.

Trains and Boats and Planes

Following the demolition of Automasters and the building of the canal-side estate, Moorside Place, the view across the bend in the Peak Forest Canal has been opened up. No boats were passing as the surface of the canal was covered with ice. Behind the canal is the M67 motorway. Crossing the motorway is the railway bridge carrying the Manchester Piccadilly to Rose Hill (Marple) line. It is only an hourly service and no trains were crossing at the time. There were a couple of planes in the sky but they are probably too faint to be made out.

Behind Brook Street & Steeles Avenue

The gates at the bottom of Brook Street were open when I was walking down there a week or so ago, affording a view of the land at the back of Steeles Avenue.

It was probably a hive of industry like much of Hyde a century ago but now it seems to be a bit of a backwater.

The grassy bank on the left with a mobile phone relay mast above is hiding the M67 motorway.
