Weekend Reflections: South of Dunkirk Bridge

Last week I posted reflections on the Peak Forest Canal at Dunkirk Bridge.

This week I'm posting reflections south of the bridge.

Reflections north of the bridge can be seen on Hyde DP Xtra.

Blue Monday: Alice round the bend

My contribution to Blue Monday features Alice going round the bend on the Peak Forest Canal.

"Alice" is a 32-foot long narrowboat used for day hire and based at the Portland Basin Marina.

This view was taken with a zoom lens from the Manchester Road Bridge. See a longer shot on Hyde DP Xtra.

Weekend Reflections at Dunkirk Bridge

Dunkirk Lane crosses bridge #4 on the Peak Forest Canal.

The Peak Forest Canal runs for 15 miles between Ashton under Lyne and Whaley Bridge. It was built to link the Ashton Canal with the tramways that brought limestone from the Peak District quarries.

Wharfinger's House

The three-storey Wharfinger's Warehouse was erected by the Peak Forest Canal Company in 1828. It is a Grade II listed building now used as offices by the Tameside & Glossop Primary Care Mental Health Service.

In the foreground two Canadian geese are resting in Moorfield Place, a housing estate built on the site of the former Automasters Engineering Works.

Fisherman by Bridge #5

The Peak Forest Canal runs for 15 miles between Ashton under Lyne and Whaley Bridge. It was built to link the Ashton Canal with the tramways that brought limestone from the Peak District quarries.

At bridge #5 the canal passes under Nursery Road and the M67 motorway. The fisherman is using live maggots as bait and looking for pike and roach.

See him from the opposite direction on Hyde DP Xtra.

Friday Fences: Sluice gate at Moorfield Place

This sluice gate on the Peak Forest Canal allows water to run off into Wilson Brook. The houses behind the fence on the right are part of Moorfield Place which was built on the former site of Automasters Engineering Works

See it in the opposite direction on Hyde DP Xtra.

See how it looked in February 2012 when there was a layer of ice on the canal.

See how it looked in March 2011.

See how it looked in 2008 before the demolition of Automasters.

ABC Wednesday: I is for Industry

The view is from the towpath of the Peak Forest Canal looking across to the site of the former Toray Mill.

See what was here in 2008 on Hyde Daily Photo Volume 1.

On the left some bricks of the original mill still stand.

On the right is a modern metal-clad shed which is home to a "light industrial unit".

A different view of Captain Clarke's Bridge

Views of Captain Clarke's bridge over the Peak Forest Canal are usually taken from the South where it's design is more evident, or from the towpath if looking North.

This photograph was taken more than two years ago by Tom Wigley who had crossed over to the other bank in order to photograph a lost memorial to members of the St George's Sunday School Rowing Club who had lost their lives in the Second World War.

Those photographs can be seen on Old Hyde.

Tranquility on the Peak Forest Canal

The CDPB theme is "Tranquility" so what else should I photograph but the Peak Forest Canal from our favourite vantage point, the Manchester Road bridge?

Weekend Reflections: Adamson Wharf

Just down the towpath from the footpath to Alexandra Street is the Adamson Wharf on the Peak Forest Canal.

Take a closer view on Hyde DP Xtra.

Footpath Sign by Peak Forest Canal

Walking down the towpath of the Peak Forest Canal from Captain Clarke's Bridge you soon come to this signpost directing walkers to Alexandra Street.

You are not expected to do a Harry-Potter-esque through the brick wall, but climb a set of steps behind the wall to a footpath leading down the side of Providence Mill.

See the footpath itself on Hyde DP Xtra.

See more signs at signs, signs.

Advance notice: With the CDPB portal currently out of action, Julie of Sydney Eye has created a page where participents in the April 1st theme (Cobblestones) can register their posts on a linky. See CDPB Theme Day

Weekend Reflections Over Yonder

Looking at the Peak Forest Canal from Manchester Road.

The path and bridleway on the right, signposted "Over Yonder" leads to the Tameside Animal Welfare shelter on Raglan Road where there used to be a bridge across the canal. That bridge has been closed for at least five years so the only through route now is along the towpath which is on the left next to the Aldi supermarket.

It looks a lot better than it did the last time I showed you this view in December 2010.

Weekend Reflections: Sluice gates

Today's photograph was taken just around the corner from the one I posted last Sunday featuring the railway bridge which is in the background here.

There was a thin layer of ice on the Peak Forest Canal but water was still flowing through these sluice gates into the Wilson Brook.

See how it looked here in March 2011 and even earlier in March 2008.

This is a contribution to Weekend Reflections.

Trains and Boats and Planes

Following the demolition of Automasters and the building of the canal-side estate, Moorside Place, the view across the bend in the Peak Forest Canal has been opened up. No boats were passing as the surface of the canal was covered with ice. Behind the canal is the M67 motorway. Crossing the motorway is the railway bridge carrying the Manchester Piccadilly to Rose Hill (Marple) line. It is only an hourly service and no trains were crossing at the time. There were a couple of planes in the sky but they are probably too faint to be made out.

Weekend Reflections in the Peak Forest Canal

Looking over the Peak Forest Canal from Manchester Road. The tall warehouse reflected in the water is Wharfingers House a grade II listed building.

On the left is the new housing development, Moorside Place, on the site of Automasters Engineering Works.

There is ice on the surface of the canal, particularly at the bend up ahead.

We've been here before witnessing the changes: For more around the world visit Weekend Reflections.

Yet more reflections by Captain Clarke's bridge

Following on from my post last Sunday here is another look towards Captain Clarke's bridge on the Peak Forest Canal taken from the field opposite the towpath. It was taken back in April and we don't seem to have had much fine weather since then.

Who, you might ask, as people do, was Captain Clarke? Find out on Old Hyde.
