Low February Shadows

Back at the beginning of Feburay I posted signs on the pavement that council workmen had scrawled over an area in need of repair.

Well here is how it looks two month's later and with the shadows at a different angle.

The sign for the Spa Car Wash is actually pointing across the road towards Kirkley Street rather than the hand car wash.

Cyclists on the Trans Pennine Trail

Two cyclists on the National Cyclist Network Route #62 approach Stockport Road bridge and the turn off to Osborne Road.

This section is along the line of the former Apethorn to Godley Junction railway.

Following persistant wet weather, the bridlepath on the left, part of the Trans Pennine trail, is like a quagmire and filled with deep puddles that reflect the winter trees.

Under Knott Fold Bridge

Following on from last week's photograph New Year's Day on the Trans Pennine Trail we now look under Knott Fold Bridge.

On the left horses have to negotiate a small jump and then move across to the right hand side of the track.

The track is barred by a gate which is locked but can be used by council vehicles that service the trail from time to time.

Walkers and cyclists must use the squeeze stile on the right.

Ahead is the bridge under Dowson Road (the one with the big puddle).

Another Day, Another Dog

Hyde Daily Photo of the Year 2012 featured a dog and the puddle under Dowson Road bridge over the the former Godley Junction to Apethorn railway whose route is followed by the Trans Pennine Trail and National Cycle Route #62.

That was taken in June. This was taken shortly after midday on New Year's Day 2013 from the other direction. The puddle is still there but this dog has sensibly walked around it and is waiting for his mistress to catch up.

Access to Ogden Court

Pedestrian access from Mottram Road opposite Morrison's supermarket leading to Ogden Court, Frank Street and Lumn Hollow.

Friday Fences: Kissing Gate

The entrance to the Trans Pennine Way (and National Cycle Route #62) at the end of Garside Street. The kissing gate was designed to prevent motorcyclists gaining access. Alas it makes it very awkward for ordinary cyclists and people pushing prams and impossible for wheelchair users to access the path.

Signs on the pavement

After someone recently slipped on the pavement here, council workers came out and marked the area in need of repair. When the repair will actually get done remains to be seen.

Grey autumn on the Trans Pennine Trail

Through my neck of the woods the Trans Pennine Trail, a long distance walking route, and the National Cycle Network Route #62 from Southport to Hornsea follow the line of the former Godley Junction to Apethorn railway.

Here, looking towards the Stockport Road bridge, the leaf-strewn quagmire on the left is the bridlepath for horse riders, whilst the tarmacced foot/cyclepath is on the right.

Friday Fences: Cobbled path to the river.

Fence posts above the cobbled path that leads from the towpath of the Peak Forest Canal down to the River Tame.

I discovered this path back in January 2008 when I photographed it from the opposite direction. That photograph was voted Best of Hyde Daily Photo 2008.

ABC Wednesday: K is for Kingston Football Ground

A rather isolated football ground accessible only by footpaths, seen here from the path leading from the towpath of the Peak Forest Canal.

On the other side it can be approached via the footpath that leads to Jet Amber Fields from Broomstairs Bridge alongside the River Tame.

The Weekend in Black & White: Garages and a Tree

When I posted a view of the footpath off Church View a couple of weeks ago, commentators wanted to know what was at the other end.

Here it is; a group of lock-up garages. One seems to have been locked-up and forgotten about for a long time as access to it is blocked by a fully-grown tree.

Friday Fences: Footpath off Church View

A new "squeeze stile" has just been installed on the footpath that connects Church View with Dowson Road.

The idea is to discourage off-road bikers who have apparently been disturbing the neighbourhood from using the path.

Track off Halton Street

The track off Halton Street leads to Bonehill Dam.

The Godley Brook flows through the valley on the right.

Muddy steps into Gower Hey Woods

These muddy steps lead down from the TransPennine Trail into Gower Hey Woods. Normally duckboards provide a safe passage across the swampy ground at the bottom.

This photograph was taken a few weeks ago after a lot of heavy rain. The brook was obviously flowing too fast for the culvert and a small lake covered the duckboards.

Since then we've had a great deal more rain and it is still falling so I imagine the water will have crept a lot higher since then but I won't be venturing down to take a look.

Up the Back Passage

This is the passageway at the back of the Clarendon Mall leading from the indoor market to the delivery bays and Reynold Street.

Compare the eighties' red brick of the Mall extension on the left to the fifties' red brick on the right and the noughtie's light red brick of "Cotton Tree Court" in the background.
