Low February Shadows

Back at the beginning of Feburay I posted signs on the pavement that council workmen had scrawled over an area in need of repair.

Well here is how it looks two month's later and with the shadows at a different angle.

The sign for the Spa Car Wash is actually pointing across the road towards Kirkley Street rather than the hand car wash.

Shadow Shot Sunday: Bench on a cold Saturday

Last week I showed you the shadow of a bench in the snow. This Saturday there was no snow but in spite of a strong sun it was bitterly cold and the shadows were sharp.

Shadow Shot Sunday: Bench in the snow

A blanket of snow had fallen overnight leaving the market ground very icy - see Hyde DP Xtra.

By mid-morning, the sun was out and casting the shadow of a bench over the now melting slush.

Market Street Shadows

Tha shadows are falling across the bottom of Market Street as yet another business bites the dust.

Waterways bathroom and tiles showroom has now closed down and the premises are up for rent. On the left is the Donnybrook Medical Centre by the bus station. The shuttered shop on the right was once the surgery of Dr Shipman.

More autumn shadows from behind St Thomas the Apostle

Two weeks ago I showed you the shadows cast across Tinker's Passage.

This photograph was taken a minute or too before that one. This time we are looking across the burial ground of St Thomas the Apostle church. Tinker's Passage lies on the other side and the previous photograph was taken just around the corner on the right.

The weather has changed since then and I doubt there'll be any more strong shadows such as these to be enjoyed for many months.

Shadow Shot Sunday: Christmas Tree on Hyde Civic Square

Hyde's Christmas tree used to be put outside the Town Hall but this year it arrived in the new Civic Square on Thursday casting its shadow across the market ground.

The lights were officially switched on on Friday. I didn't go down myself this year but reports suggest that quite a lot of other folk did.

I went down on Saturday morning and found some young people in Santa hats near the tree and inside the mall discovered a PINK Christmas tree spouting a fountain. See them on Hyde DP Xtra.

Yellow Scaffold Shadows

Last Monday I showed you the yellow scaffolding being erected around Zeenath's electrical goods shop.

This now is from a week last Saturday when a low bright sun was shining and casting shadows down the street.

Shadow Shot Sunday: Hyde Market

Yesterday I showed you a photograph of the market in the pouring rain.

Today for contrast I bring you autumn sunshine and shadows.

In the background, Madge's ice-cream van is parked in front of the White Lion.

Long Shadows on Market Street

Another view from last Saturday week when long shadows were being cast across Market Street.

Behind the brand new litter bin is the Victorain bus (formerly tram) shelter which is a Grade II listed structure and is therefore a survivor of the recent £1.2 million revamp of the market.

Shadows across Stockport Road

A tree throws its shadow across Stockport Road.

The Jungfrau hairdressers seemed a good "J" idea for a contribution to ABC Wednesday.

I walked up here a few weeks ago only to discover that the sign over the door had been taken down. Whether the business is changing hands, closing down or just being renovated and awaiting a new sign, I've no idea.

I was going to post it then anyway but as it turned out a more important event needed mention that day so I've saved this for a contribution to Shadow Shot Sunday.

Summer returns to Hyde Market

Last week I posted September shadows across Clarendon Place and said that summer was now over.

Well it has come back for a few days at least. Yesterday was a bit of a schorcher as you can tell from the shadows under the stalls on the market and the blue sky in the background.

September shadows across Clarendon Place

They say the wettest ever summer for years is now over (summer that is not the wet) but on the first day of September the sun casts shadows across the end of Clarendon Place and onto the shutters of the long closed-down former Gift Shop.

Shadows across the market ground

Sun on the last Saturday of June meant many shadows fell across the market ground where the new stalls were being erected.

One slight problem; the stone flags around the children's roundabout had raised the ground so much that it couldn't operate.

However, I am pleased to report the problem has since been solved and the carousel is turning again.
