Shadow Shot Sunday: Bench on a cold Saturday
Last week I showed you the shadow of a bench in the snow. This Saturday there was no snow but in spite of a strong sun it was bitterly cold and the shadows were sharp.

Shadow Shot Sunday: Bench in the snow
A blanket of snow had fallen overnight leaving the market ground very icy - see Hyde DP Xtra.
By mid-morning, the sun was out and casting the shadow of a bench over the now melting slush.

Apple iPod advertisment
A few weeks ago at the Clarendon Place bus stop I captured this bus with a livery advertising the Apple iPod.
I have no interest in an iPod but did think it would be a suitable "A" contribution for the next round of ABC Wednesday.

Market Place before and after
Whilst work on the revamping of Hyde market ground was being undertaken, the area of Market Place in front of the White Lion, William Hills and Santander (formerly Abbey) Bank was used as a works site. Above is how it looked on the Saturday before Christmas. Below is how it looks three weeks later with everything finally cleared away.

Painting the shelter/bench in the Market Place
The shelter in the Market Place was fenced off recently whilst it got a new coat of paint.
Originally it was a tram shelter but now it just shelters a pair of benches in the pedestrianised Market Place.

Newton Hall after the dig
This photograph shows the grounds of Newton Hall restored after the archaeological dig in April and was taken at the recent Heritage Open Day where some of the finds were on show. Behind the fence lies the main road from Hyde to Ashton.
See the hall itself on Hyde DP Xtra.
Newton Hall, a Grade II listed building and one of Britain's earliest cruck-framed buildings, stands on the corner of Dukinfield Road and Dunkirk Lane in Hyde, Cheshire. It eventually became used as a barn for the farm that occupied part of the site. It was encased in a brick building having a blue slate roof. When the farm buildings were being demolished in the 1960s, to make way for industrial buildings, the contractor saw the ancient cruck-framed construction and, realising it was an important ancient building, stopped demolition immediately. The other farm buildings were later demolished but the original medieval hall was preserved. Sir George Kenyon, the Chairman of William Kenyon & Sons Ltd of Dukinfield, rescued it. Browns of Wilmslow undertook the restoration work and this was completed in 1970.
During the restoration work, a large glass panel was inserted into one side the purpose of this being twofold. It allows sufficient light into the hall so that it can be used for modern purposes such as holding conferences, seminars and meetings and it also allows the construction of the building to be viewed from the outside. It now has a stone flag floor with under-floor heating, whereas originally it would have had an earthen floor.

In April 2012 Tameside History Forum in conjunction with Salford University undertook an archaeological dig at the site. Over 500 photographs of the excavation can be found on their Photobucket gallery.

Blue and yellow on Hyde Market
Last Thursday workmen on Hyde market ground were busy laying flagstones and erecting two new benches.
See how it looked a couple of hours later on Hyde DP Xtra.

Weekend in Black & White: Lower Bennett Street Gatespost
Just by a footpath that cuts the corner between Lower Bennett Street and Dukinfield Road is a little bench and this castellated gatepost. I've so far been unable to discover its origin.
The coloured version can be viewed on Geograph.

Weekend Reflections: Clarendon Place in the rain

Last Saturday the rain bucketed down all weekend.
At least it produced some interesting reflections around Clarendon Place.
According to the forecast the torrential rain will be here again this weekend.

ABC Wednesday: V is for Vandalism

It must have been a powerful blow that broke the glass in the back of this bus shelter on Manchester Road.
Alas such vandalism is all too common a sight.

Garden of Tranquility

The Garden of Tranquility in Hyde Park is a memorial for those patients who suffered at the hands of Harold Shipman.
The garden includes a granite trickle fountain, designed by Mel Chantry and is surrounded by herbs reclaimed from the old Newton Lodge which once sat on the site.
I am away in St Annes until next Monday. A series of posts have been scheduled over the period but as I expect to be offline they won't be tweeted by me nor posted on Facebook.

Shadow Shot Sunday: Godley Station

The bench and shelter on the Manchester bound platform at Godley Station had just been painted and was possibly still wet. I didn't test it. Meanwhile the fence posts cast shadows across the platform.

201 Monochrome

Another monochrome Tenin-esque photo. Compare it with the one I posted in August 2010 and the only main difference is that the M&M discount store has been closed down.
If you want to see the straightened colour version then check it on Geograph.
