New Year's Day Trees

Dowson Road from the green space at the top of Gower Road.

At the Shell filling station, behind the tall birch tree, petrol is a penny a litre dearer than it was on Christmas Day. although diesel is the same price.

The lock-up garages on the left are shielded by fast growing leylandii. There are actually three trees in a line, but from this angle they seem to merge into one.

Blue Monday: Ewen Fields from the end of Leigh Street

I took this about 10am this morning. It was frosty overnight but the sun was shining.

The view is through a gap in the gate to the field that formerly belonged to Leigh Street school over towards the blue terrace and stands of Ewen Fields, home of Hyde F.C.

The "Tigers" used to be the reds but after a re-alignment with Manchester City they are now the blues.

Mottram Play Area

Behind the fence on this green space between Ashworth Lane, Mottram Fold and Broadbottom Road is a children's play area.

This was taken the same day after I'd been escorted by a policeman past the nearby scene of the murder of Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes.

Friday Fences/Green Days: Gee Cross Play Area

This is part of the newly opened Gee Cross Play Area. It has come about as result of a campaign by the "Friends of Sam Redfern Green" who were formed in 2009.

Weekend in Black & White: Lower Bennett Street Gatespost

Just by a footpath that cuts the corner between Lower Bennett Street and Dukinfield Road is a little bench and this castellated gatepost. I've so far been unable to discover its origin.

Signs at Clough Gate

Signs at the Clough Gate entrance to Gower Hey Woods.

There is a "No Tipping" sign which doesn't mean you don't have to give gratuities to anyone but is addressed to fly-tippers who dump rubbish (shame is they can't read).

Another sign is "No Firearms and No Motorcycles" - the latter seems sensible as there's certainly been problems with people driving motorbikes where they shouldn't. But surely firearms are illegal anywhere so why the need for a specific prohibition here?

Behind is a "Welcome" signboard with a map of the area and details of the wildlife that can be encountered here.

Also there's a gas-main indicator below another sign that appears to have been covered over (but is in fact a marker - see the comments).

Shadow Shot Sunday: Hyde Bus Station

The pedestrian entrance from Manchester Road to Hyde Bus Station which was modernised in 2005.

Behind the trees on the left lies the M67 motorway.

Croft Millennium Green 2010

Today's photo is by Mavis Nichols. It was taken in July 2010 and shows a game of cricket on the Croft Millennium Green. Since then a Multi-Use Games Area has been constructed on the Green.

In the background is the Theatre Royal. Muriel is secretary of the Theatre Royal Onward Trust dedicated to seeing it eventually reopen.

I am away in St Annes until next Monday. A series of posts have been scheduled over the period but as I expect to be offline they won't be tweeted by me nor posted on Facebook.

Junction of Walker Lane

Behind the fence on the corner of Lumn Road and Walker Lane is a small open space.

Across Walker Lane is what used to be the Globe Inn but which has since been converted into a residential property. See the conversion underway in November 2011 and check out how the pub looked just half a decade ago.

On the right a Stott's bus can be seen heading down Lumn Road.

Shadow Shot Sunday: Behind Waverley Road

There is a little triangle of land behind the houses on Waverley Road and Laburnum Avenue (out of sight on the right). The third side of the hypotenuse is a footpath leading between the two and skirting the back of houses on a couple of cul-de-sacs.

These shadows were captured on a sunny day a few weeks ago.

Football on Croft Millennium Green

I was walking down Henry Street the other day and was rather surprised to discover that a football pitch had been built on the middle of the Croft Millennium Green.

It wasn't there when I was by it in March.

Pole Bank was the home of the Ashton family, prominent mill-owners. The house is now a private nursing home. The grounds, however are a public open space.

I first published a photo of the pond in May 2008. In early 2010 the pond was dredged as part of renovation work which you can see here and also here.

This photograph was taken last Tuesday. It was raining heavily and I had to shelter under the trees as best I could. Another photograph from a different angle can be seen on Hyde DP Xtra.
