There is a mix of takeaways and terraced housing on Stockport Road. The Indian takeaway has recently changed its name to "iFood" but the Chinese takeaway has been known as "Happy Family" for at least the last fifteen years. On the other side of Lumn Road is the Clarkes Arms.

Zooming down Market Street

For this photograph I used a zoom lens to focus towards the lower end of the road and cropped off the bottom of the picture. The result is a foreshortening of the perspective which gives a heightened sense of how busy Market Street can be on a Saturday afternoon.

M67 from Clark Way

Viewed from Clark Way looking west towards Manchester. The M67 was conceived as a motorway link from Manchester to Sheffield but the only parts that were built were the Hyde and Denton bypasses opened in the late 1970s. Prior to the motorway the view here would have been of George Street with terraced housing, several pubs and two churches.

ABC Wednesday: D is for Driving Test Centre

UK driving tests are the responsibility of the DSA (Driving Standards Agency), one of the executive agencies of the Motoring and Freight Services group, part of the Department for Transport.

First you have to take a theory test for which, in these parts, you'll have to go to Stockport, Manchester or Oldham. Then you have to pass a practical test which you can take here at the Hyde Driving Test Centre on the corner of Henry Street and Perrin Street.

Kirkley House

A map from 1874 shows Kirkley House as a rather grand detached house in its own grounds roughly where Higher Henry Street is now. On an 1897 map, Kirkley Hat Works is shown between Higher Henry Street, Thornley Street and Swain Street (now Dowson Road). McKenzie's auto repairs is now at the end of Kirkley Street. This used to be Norwood's wood yard and one could walk through it onto Church View but that is now blocked off by the garage. More information can be found on the Hyde, Cheshire blog.

Supermarket snow

I was asked recently if I'd taken any photos of the snow.

Well compared to the rest of the UK we've not had a huge amount of the white stuff. We thought the weekend was going to be rough and so cancelled our usual Saturday trip and I did an extra shop in town last Thursday.

In the event it wasn't too bad althought it was bitterly cold. A larger amount of snow fell Sunday night and we had a fair covering Monday morning. The main roads had been gritted and were moving well but the pavements were treacherous. A neighbour offered me a lift down to Morrisons.

New Year's Day Trees

Dowson Road from the green space at the top of Gower Road.

At the Shell filling station, behind the tall birch tree, petrol is a penny a litre dearer than it was on Christmas Day. although diesel is the same price.

The lock-up garages on the left are shielded by fast growing leylandii. There are actually three trees in a line, but from this angle they seem to merge into one.

Yellow Christmas

Very shortly after noon on Christmas Day, motorists were busy filling up at the Shell station on Dowson Road. Being one of the few days when the local superstores close, it probably had a little less competition than usual. Regular unleaded was 130.9 pence per litre and diesel 138.9 ppl.

Wash & Go

Behind the "Leading Edge" hair and beauty salon on the corner of Dowson Road and Markland Street is the "Spa" hand car-wash. Maps of the early 20th century show this as the site of the Hyde Steam Laundry.

Northwest Blood Bikes Manchester

Blood Bikes fund-raising on Hyde Market.

Northwest Blood Bikes Manchester is a registered charity, which offers an out of hours and free of charge urgent medical courier service to the NHS. They volunteer to play their part in saving peoples lives and save the NHS money that would otherwise be wasted on taxis or expensive couriers, but more than anything else they do it because they love it. Mellow Yellow Monday: Box Junction

Compare this view if you will with the first in my post of 14th November showing the resurfacing of the road.

With the work completed a box junction has been created at the end of Higher Henry Street. At busy periods there can be a queue of traffic back along Dowson Road from the Market Street lights. Vehicles are not allowed to stop inside the box unless their exit is clear which should allow traffic coming out of Higher Henry Street an easier passage.

I recently showed you a clear view of Corporation Street and noted that new retractable bollards had been erected since.

Several things have gone in the revamp of Hyde Market but the red telephone kiosks have remained.

Across the road a red car is passing the red-brick Town Hall.

Driving through the Water's Edge

A couple of weeks ago I was on my way back from Stockport on the bus. As we approached Pole Bank the bus slowed down. A thunderstorm had caused flash flooding where a small stream is carried under the road by a culvert which appeared to have blocked temporarily.

I was on the front seat and still had my camera round my neck (hidden under my overcoat) and I was able to get a couple of quick shots of the scene as we went through.

Car park on the site of Long Meadow Mill (demolished 1900). On the left with the tree in front is the Donnybrook Medical Centre. On the right behind the back of shops on Clarendon Street is the Job Centre. In the centre of the background is the now closed Astoria Bingo Hall.

The Weekend in Black & White: Garages and a Tree

When I posted a view of the footpath off Church View a couple of weeks ago, commentators wanted to know what was at the other end.

Here it is; a group of lock-up garages. One seems to have been locked-up and forgotten about for a long time as access to it is blocked by a fully-grown tree.

Blue Monday: Tesco Filling Station

This is the new 24hour Tesco filling station off Ashworth Lane, Hattersley.

The huge construction on the left is a multi-storey car park - see last Friday's post on Hyde DP Xtra. The actual supermarket is beyond the car park - see Friday Fences.

Shell open again

After its extensive refurbishment, the Shell filling station on Dowson Road is open again.

I noticed that unleaded petrol is priced at 128.9 ppl and diesel at 131.9 ppl which makes the former a penny dearer and the latter a penny cheaper than the price at Morrisons.

A New Yellow Canopy

Work on the refurbishment of the Shell filling station on Dowson Road continues apace.

Here the yellow canopy is now going back up again.

Work on the Shell Filling Station

A month ago I showed you the a big red hole at the Shell filling station on Dowson Road.

The fuel tanks have now been buried and most of the hole filled in. Pipework leads to the points where the pumps will be fitted.

It looks like it will be several weeks before the station re-opens for business.
