Skywatch Friday: Hyde Town Hall from Hyde Central Station

To the left of the Town Hall are the high rise flats, John Grundy House and Chartist House. A large leylandii tree on Cross Street seems to dwarf the larger buildings.

Skyview Friday: Pigeon over the Town Hall

I took a photo of the market last week and it wasn't till I downloaded it that I noticed the pigeon flying over the Town Hall.

It is carrying something in its beak but I can't decide what. As I was using my phone-camera this is the best close-up I can get.

A New Yellow Canopy

Work on the refurbishment of the Shell filling station on Dowson Road continues apace.

There are pigeons amongst the chimneys.

How many can you spot?

ABC Wednesday: X at the Sportsman Inn

The Sportsman Inn is a "real ale" pub but features here today as a contribution for the letter X at ABC Wednesday.

Firstly because of the X on the top of the roof whose purpose I presume is to act as a lightning conductor.

Weekend Reflections: The Hot Crumpet

Reflected in the counter of the "Hot Crumpet" sandwich shop on Dowson Road are the roofs and windows of the terraced houses across the road. You may need to screw your eyes a bit to see them properly.

St George's from Hyde Central Station

My contribution to Ruby Tuesday this week is a view from Hyde Central station looking over the roofs of the redbrick houses on Great Norbury Street towards St George's church.

ABC Wednesday: Y is for Yellow

The bright yellow on the roofs of the stalls on Hyde Market is very distinctive.

In 2012 an extensive revamp of Hyde Market is to take place. The £1.2m redevelopment will begin in January and will see the creation of a civic space for events and a change in the layout of stalls to improve access. Key elements of the proposed scheme include the use of high quality materials, removal of street clutter, changing the lay-out of the stalls to improve access to Clarendon Square shopping centre, and the creation of a civic space. The work will take place in two phases so that half of the market will remain open and in use whilst work takes place on the other half. The whole work should be completed by September 2012. The trees such as the one seen behind the stalls will be removed and new permanent stalls provided. Whether their roofs will still be so colourful remains to be seen.

2012 Twilight

This was taken just before dawn on New Year's Day.

A plane over Dowson Road

Planes regularly fly over the rooftops of Dowson Road.

Many of them are getting ready to land at Manchester Airport but this one is heading towards the North and gaining height so is probably on an outgoing flight.

Snow on the Low

As I left Tameside hospital on Thursday morning after my operation it was snowing and by lunchtime the roofs of houses on Brooks Avenue were covered. By late afternoon the snow had turned to rain but in the distance by the Hare & Hounds on Werneth Low the ground was still covered in snow.

ABC Wednesday: R is for the Ruins of Charlotte House Residential Care Home

The ruins of Charlotte House, a care home on Albert Road. It caught fire in the early hours of the 16th December 2010. The home was in the process of being closed down and only a few residents were still living there. They all escaped safely but the building now faces demolition.

I showed you a wider view of this in May and it doesn't look much different now.

This was taken early evening last Tuesday looking over the rooftops of Gee Cross towards the Hare & Hounds on Werneth Low Road.

Roof of Talbot House

This is the roof of Talbot House on Great Norbury Street.

I took this close-up of the roof hoping to get a better view of the carved stonework but actually the spiked lightning conductor seems to be the most interesting aspect.

Owl on the roof

Perched next to two chimney pots (a Scullery Pot and a Crown Pot) on the roof of a shop is a stone owl. Such owls have been seen on other roofs in the town, notably the White Lion.

Attic Roofs

I posted a photograph of the middle two of these attics back in May 2006.

They've not altered a lot in five years.

A photograph of chimney-pots a little lower down Market Street were voted Photograph of the Year in 2009.

I wonder how many people viewing the shop fronts actually look up at the rooflines.
