Skywatch Friday: How it looked a week ago

This is how the sky looked a week ago with a bright blue sky peeking out of the clouds over the Hare and Hounds in the centre and the spire of Hyde Chapel on the right.

Now it is back to torrential rain and high winds - a typical British Summer.

Storm Clouds over Gee Cross

This was taken at the same time as my recent photo of the Hare and Hounds.

It looks a little further West towards the trees below the trig point at the junction of Werneth Low Road and Cowlishaw Road.

I used a zoom lens to reach a distance of some two kilometres. The spire of Hyde Chapel is actually about a kilometre away although the cattle seem to be grazing close to.

To highlight the dramatic effect I've introduced a few painterly touches.

Yet another shot of the Hare & Hounds

During a brief bright respite from the rain a few evenings ago I stuck my head through the window and zoomed in on the Hare and Hounds on Werneth Low.

It has been raining pretty solidly ever since.

The last time I showed you the same view was January.

In June 2010 I posted three shots from morning, noon and night of the longest day.

Skywatch Friday: Clouds over the Hare & Hounds

I posted a view of the sky over the Hare & Hounds on Werneth Low back in October 2011. For Skywatchers though it is an ever changing view. This is how it looked on Thursday at 10am with birds flying around and the sun just trying to peep out under the clouds.

About twenty minutes later the clouds had mostly gone, the sun shone and the sky turned blue. This is how it looked another three hours later with sheep grazing in the field below the inn.

Snow on the Low

As I left Tameside hospital on Thursday morning after my operation it was snowing and by lunchtime the roofs of houses on Brooks Avenue were covered. By late afternoon the snow had turned to rain but in the distance by the Hare & Hounds on Werneth Low the ground was still covered in snow.

ABC Wednesday: W is for War Memorial on Werneth Low

The wooden model of Hyde War Memorial, borrowed from the Werneth Low Visitor Centre, was on display at Gee Cross Fete last Sunday.

In 1920, following a public appeal, which raised exactly £14,013, 14 shilling and 8 pennies, the War Memorial Committee of the Hyde Borough Council made a momentous decision by purchasing Lower Higham Farm and all its land. Following the purchase a scheme was put forward to protect the land forever for the health and well being of the community, a lasting tribute to the 710 men from this area who perished in The Great War of 1914 to 1918. On the site known as Hackingknife, at a cost of £2,000, Hyde's main war memorial was officially unveiled on the 25th of June 1921. The land and farm are now held in trust by the Hyde War Memorial Trust.

A more distant view of the memorial can be seen on Hyde DP Xtra.

Bridge at Hattersley

Last week on HDP Vol.1 I showed you Shadows entering Hattersley.

This is the view from about the same point looking in the opposite direction over the bridge towards Stockport. The hill in the background is Werneth Low which rises to a height of 279 metres (915 ft).

Halfway along the bridge is a group of pigeons. As I crossed the bridge they flew off but once I'd passed they returned.

You can see more of the pigeons on Hyde DP Xtra.

Tomorrow I will show you what they were looking at.
