ABC Wednesday: F is for Freshfield Road

Freshfield Road leads from Gower Road to Grosvenor Road. This was taken during the spell of snow that fell four weeks ago in January.

Zooming down Market Street

For this photograph I used a zoom lens to focus towards the lower end of the road and cropped off the bottom of the picture. The result is a foreshortening of the perspective which gives a heightened sense of how busy Market Street can be on a Saturday afternoon.

Low February Shadows

Back at the beginning of Feburay I posted signs on the pavement that council workmen had scrawled over an area in need of repair.

Well here is how it looks two month's later and with the shadows at a different angle.

The sign for the Spa Car Wash is actually pointing across the road towards Kirkley Street rather than the hand car wash.

Skywatch Friday: The Clock & The Bells

The B6468 through Gee Cross used to just bend right at its junction with Smithy Lane. In 2006 a roundabout was built to accommodate the James North Clock which had previously stood in the grounds of the Slack Mill which had closed in 1998 and was subsequently demolished.

The Ring o' Bells pub in the background has recently closed and is now boarded up.

Market Place Slush

A blanket of snow had fallen overnight and though the roads were gritted and passable, the pavements in town on Saturday were icy and treacherous underfoot.

The Santander Bank on the corner of Market Place and Hamnett Street was formerly an Abbey branch.

On the right, £-stretcher, facing the bank, was formerly Woolworth's.

Dowson Road in the snow

After a couple of days of snow the main road is flowing freely having been gritted. The pavements however have not been cleared and are treacherous.

At the Shell filling station diesel is the same price as on New Year's Day but petrol has gone down a penny per litre.

Behind the leylandii on the right are a group of lock-up garages which you can see on Hyde DP Xtra.

Someone called Alan who now lives in New Zealand asked me if I could photograph the view from outside 42 Gower Road looking towards the allotments, the valley of the Gower Hey Brook and Westend Lane in the far background.

Dunkirk Lane

With the wet weather predominating, I thought I'd delve into my archives and find an unpublished photo from September.

On the left is Frederick House,the Social Care & Health offices of Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council.

On the right is Newton Hall.

Ahead is the steeple of St Stephen's Church (1891-2011).

Behind us the lane leads past the home of Starchaser Rockets down to the Peak Forest Canal.

Yellow Christmas

Very shortly after noon on Christmas Day, motorists were busy filling up at the Shell station on Dowson Road. Being one of the few days when the local superstores close, it probably had a little less competition than usual. Regular unleaded was 130.9 pence per litre and diesel 138.9 ppl.

New Beech Street Fence

The fence divides New Beech Street from the embankment above the M67 motorway.

Garside Street

Yesterday I showed you the moon over Garside Street.

Today I'm showing a little more of the street. On the right hand side is a row of terraced houses. On the left hand side is Enfield Court, modern retirement apartments. At the bottom of the street a kissing gate leads into Swains Valley and a path onto the TransPennine trail (and National Cycle Route #62).

Moon over Garside Street

The moon is visible over Garside Street whilst the bright afternoon sun glows in the windows of the houses on Dowson Road.

I zoomed in on the moon and you see a closer shot in colour on Hyde DP Xtra and in black&white on Ackworth born, gone West.

Mellow Yellow Monday: Box Junction

Compare this view if you will with the first in my post of 14th November showing the resurfacing of the road.

With the work completed a box junction has been created at the end of Higher Henry Street. At busy periods there can be a queue of traffic back along Dowson Road from the Market Street lights. Vehicles are not allowed to stop inside the box unless their exit is clear which should allow traffic coming out of Higher Henry Street an easier passage.

The window of the "Simply Chinese" takeaway reflects the street scene.

ABC Wednesday: Q is for Queen Street

At one time Queen Street was a busy thoroughfare that went through Slack Mill to Lumn Road.

Now a school and new houses have been built on the site of the mill so now it only leads to the school gates and the car park for the gymnasium belonging to Ricky (Hitman) Hatton.

Note the 20mph sign on the road.

Resurfacing the road

Between about 9am and 4pm all this week Dowson Road at its junction with Market Street has been fenced off while work was taking place to resurface the road.

Across the corner is Ricky (Hitman) Hatton's gymnasium.

Driving through the Water's Edge

A couple of weeks ago I was on my way back from Stockport on the bus. As we approached Pole Bank the bus slowed down. A thunderstorm had caused flash flooding where a small stream is carried under the road by a culvert which appeared to have blocked temporarily.

I was on the front seat and still had my camera round my neck (hidden under my overcoat) and I was able to get a couple of quick shots of the scene as we went through.
