A sneaky look (I stuck my camera through the gate and pointed it at right angles) at the last remnants of the Christy Outlet Shop at Carrfield Mill before it was finally demolished a day or two later.

Market Place before and after

Whilst work on the revamping of Hyde market ground was being undertaken, the area of Market Place in front of the White Lion, William Hills and Santander (formerly Abbey) Bank was used as a works site. Above is how it looked on the Saturday before Christmas. Below is how it looks three weeks later with everything finally cleared away.

Signs on the pavement

After someone recently slipped on the pavement here, council workers came out and marked the area in need of repair. When the repair will actually get done remains to be seen.

Ruby Tuesday: Fever ward awaits demolition

Hyde Hospital was built in 1886 as a "Fever Hospital". By 1929 it was known as Hyde Infectious Diseases Hospital. From 1948-1955 it was known again as Hyde Isolation Hospital. In the late 1980s, wards 1 to 3 were demolished to make way for Hyde Nursing Home.

This red-brick building, Ward 4, known to many as the TB ward, continued to be used by some ancillary services until 1996. It is now being demolished.

Painting the shelter/bench in the Market Place

The shelter in the Market Place was fenced off recently whilst it got a new coat of paint.

Originally it was a tram shelter but now it just shelters a pair of benches in the pedestrianised Market Place.

Friday Fences: Cotton Mills Development

Yesterday I took a look at the Cotton Mills Development which will see around 300 houses built on the site of the former Hyde Mill, which was demolished in 2009.

See how it looked in June 2010.

So far a third of the site has been developed and many of the new houses are already occupied. Behind the fences here, building work continues.

Yellow Scaffold Shadows

Last Monday I showed you the yellow scaffolding being erected around Zeenath's electrical goods shop.

This now is from a week last Saturday when a low bright sun was shining and casting shadows down the street.

Resurfacing the road

Between about 9am and 4pm all this week Dowson Road at its junction with Market Street has been fenced off while work was taking place to resurface the road.

Across the corner is Ricky (Hitman) Hatton's gymnasium.

Yellow Scaffolding

Scaffolding is being erected around the Zeenath building on the corner of Market Street and Port Street. Not only are the scaffolders wearing high-visibility yellow jackets but so are the bottom pieces of scaffolding.

Last Thursday workmen on Hyde market ground were busy laying flagstones and erecting two new benches.

Painting the Heritage Bus Shelter

A week last Sunday when the weather was still kind, a workman in a blue teeshirt was busy painting the "Heritage" bus shelter on Market Street.

Originally a tram shelter it is a Grade II listed structure.

Sunday afternoons are very quiet and there are fewer buses stopping by - see it from the opposite direction a couple of weeks earlier.

Work behind the fencing

There is fencing around both sides of the "heritage bus stop" on Market Street whilst workmen are busy erecting a second planter on the market ground. I showed you them working on it in my post last Monday.

4 Men in Yellow Jackets & a Digger

Yesterday I showed you the new planter on the North-West corner of the market.

There will be another planter on the South-West corner and the foundations for it were being dug out last week.

Market Renewal Phase 2

Compare if you will with my posts of 7th February 2012 and of 29th February 2012.

The telephone box is still where it was but the "Crown Pole" has gone as have the market stalls along the front. Traders have moved into the Northern half of the market ground while this half is renewed. Much of the area has been repaved and new stalls have been partially erected outside the Clarendon Mall.

In the background is the dome of what was original Brownson's and is now £-stretcher but which everyone remembers as Woolworths.

The scene is probably already a bit different as this was taken before my recent holiday and I've not been down into town since my return as yet.

Old Bank, Old Shelter, New Post

With phase 2 of the market renewal ongoing there is good view of the side of the HSBC bank. Previously it was the Midland Bank and the Bank Chambers are over 100 years old - see Old Hyde.

On the right is the canopy of the "Heritage Bus Shelter" as it is known, originally a tram shelter and itself a Grade II listed structure.

In the centre of the newly reflagged portion of the market ground is a round metal post. I wonder what it will turn out to be.

The Back of the New Inn

This is the rear of the New Inn as seen from Sundial Close off Wardlebrook Avenue on the Hattersley Estate.

The former Robinson's Inn by the side of the A57 road from Liverpool to Lincoln, is currently being demolished.

There may have been an inn on the site since the 1600s and it was known as a highwayman's inn. There are tales of it being haunted by a ghost named Mary.

However the New Inn was first licensed around 1856 with Robert Turner being the first Innkeeper.

William F Gratton was the landlord in the 1930s. Between 1927 and 1930 there were sixteen serious accidents on this stretch of road that were attributed to a "Phantom Lorry". Read the story. This is probably why a lorry features in the Inn sign.

It was the local of the Moors Murderers, Brady & Hindley whose house on Wardlebrook Avenue was behind the Inn. That house was demolished many years ago.

A later landlord was the father of boxer Ricky Hatton who was brought up in the New Inn. Part of the celler was used as a gymnasium.

A planter planted

As work on the renewal of Hyde Market continues, a "planter" has now been planted in front of the red telephone box on the corner of Market Street and Clarendon Street.

As I was taking this photograph a passer-by remarked that it looked like a giant ashtray.

I'm not sure where the red bricks on the pallet are destined to go.

The carousel keeps on turning

As I posted last Sunday the roundabout was stopped for a time as the new flags had raised the ground and prevented it turning.

But all is now well. As the sign says "This roundabout was manufactured by Halsteads of Sowerby Bridge in 1897", and you don't stop the old girl for very long. The fare today is 50p. 100 years ago it was probably a ha'penny.

Shadows across the market ground

Sun on the last Saturday of June meant many shadows fell across the market ground where the new stalls were being erected.

One slight problem; the stone flags around the children's roundabout had raised the ground so much that it couldn't operate.

However, I am pleased to report the problem has since been solved and the carousel is turning again.
