The Toruń Panorama

As the new tourist information sign will inform you, the panorama of Toruń is one of the seven wonders of Poland. Spectacular during the day and simply stunning at night...it is the must-see photographic attraction here in Toruń. Even after 9 years of living here I never get tired of this view...and you can see why!

Vistula Pleasure Cruise

This is the pleasure boat Wanda which takes tourists on daily trips up and down Toruń's stretch of the River Vistula. Apart from her and the odd canoe, there really isn't much other traffic on Poland's longest and most well-known river.

Bulwar Traffic

Yesterday's afternoon traffic in Bulwar Filadlfijski (Philadelphia Boulevard), that stretches along between the River Vistula on the left and the city walls on the right. In the distance you can see the main bridge which is often the cause of many traffic jams. Next year a brand new 2nd road bridge will open up further down the river.

By the way it's got its name due to the fact that Toruń is actually twinned with Philadelphia, USA.

The Panorama

Here is the panorama of Toruń as seen through the glass window of TVN24's TV studio. I've lived here for 9 years and every time I see this view it still grabs me! One of the best views in the world!!!

Toruń's TV Studio

Yesterday, TORUŃ DAILY PHOTO was granted access inside TVN24's Toruń studio. Overlooking the River Vistula and the beautiful panorama of Toruń, the studio has a great backdrop! The guest would sit in the hot seat and be interviewed by a live link up with the anchorman in the news studio in Warsaw. TVN24 is one of Poland's main national news networks.

The Frozen Vistula

With temperatures reaching as low as minus 18 in the past few weeks...it's not surprising that the River Vistula is frozen! The third image shows a small pool in the middle of the River which the local birds have turned into a bath!

Ferry Across the Vistula

For years there has been a boat ferrying Torunians across the small stretch of the Vistula to see the picture postcard panoramic view of the old town. This is the original Katarzynka ferry which is now a static historical monument. During the summer months you can hop on its replacement which is called originally...Katarzynka II!!

River Relaxation

When the sun is shining and the weather is warm...there is no better place to relax than by the glistening waters of the River Vistula. This young couple know exactly where to hang out.

Relaxing by the River

The sun is out, the skies are blue...and sping is back in town! The bulwar along the banks of the River Vistula was busy yesterday with people relaxing and soaking up the sun. It won't be long now until the pub barges get moored up and the beer gardens will appear!

River of Ice

With the temperatures plummeting here in Toruń...the Vistula is looking very white indeed!!Here is a stunning photo sent in by one of my friends Ruth Harrison. You can visit her excellent blog about Poland "My Search for Real Poland" over at:

Toruń Under Water

Streets submerged in water
No walking in this street!
At one point the water level in this street was as high as the wall!
The Wanda tourist boat still manages to operate (albeit from a much higher point)
The boats on the left is where the river bank usually begins.
Bushes, bricks and umbrellas are now submerged in the river

May has been a very wet month for Poland...with severe floods and deaths down in the south. It has been a major news story here for the past couple of weeks but one which has not really had much international coverage.

The floods have also had some impact here in Toruń. As the dam in nearby Włocławek became too full, it had to be opened releasing a large surge of water and causing the Vistula to burst its banks. Bulwar Filadelfijski has been under water for several days...with the level so high that it reached the walls of Hotel Bulwar.

Thankfully, the water levels are receding now.

A Lazy Afternoon by the River

On a warm sunny afternoon the Philadelphia Boulevard (Bulwar Filadelfiski), on the banks of the River Vistula, is a perfect place to relax and watch the world go by.

A Cheap Stay in Toruń

With the prospect of becoming the 2016 European Capital of Culture and also the looming 2012 European Football Championships...there is a new hotel boom here in Toruń. In the space of a year there have been at least 3-4 new hotels. There has also been a boom in budget accommodation (most of the hotels here in Toruń are 3 star). The Accor Hotel group have opened up a new Hotel Etap which is situated near the River Vistula (only 6 mins walk into town).

Spring Buds

You know spring is definetly here when the buds start to appear. Having said that the weather here in Toruń is pretty strange at the moment. Often days begin very cold (even as low as +3 degrees) and then later in the day, the sun appears and it's quite warm.

Here are some buds on a tree on the banks of the River Vistula.

Communist Changing Rooms

Imagine whipping off your clothes behind the concrete walls of these open, stand-in changing rooms and then lying on the grass to soak up a few rays. Well, that's what many of Toruń's residents used to (and some probably still do)...on the banks of the River Vistula.

The Bridge

Toruń's one and only pedestrian/traffic bridge has been standing over the Vistula since the 1930's. It often gets blocked with immense tailbacks and for anyone living on the southern side of the river, delays are often inevitable. A 2nd bridge has been on the cards for many years. And it is still just that...on the cards. The plans are in place...but the latest news is that the project is currently without an engineer. Watch this space!
