Iced In

Phenom

People have seen icy puddles before. I grew up in northern Illinois, where icy puddles were the norm in late autumn. In fact, an icy puddle in January is the usual in many parts of the world. So forgive me for showing you this picture of something you've seen a million times.

But an icy puddle at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena, California on January 13th, 2013 at 1:27:08 pm is momentous. A record should be kept. A notation must be made. This should be posted, publicly, for future generations to see in some archive somewhere.

You will not be surprised that upon our return an hour later, the ice was gone.

Skim Coat

The Waterfall of Ice

Well twp days ago we posted the photograph of the frozen River Vistula. But nothing compares to this shot...a frozen cascade of water!!! This is the old mill, taken through the window from the bar of Hotel 1231. The water is usually flowing freely but with the recent temperatures plummeting...has been frozen momentarily in time.

Deep Freeze

It's a frigid Monochrome Monday here. I thought I would post the same icy image as yesterday only in black and white today. Try and stay warm!

Blacks Creek has formed its first skim of ice this season, forcing the waterfowl to scout out some open water in the vicinity of Furnace Brook Parkway.

On Thin Ice!

Yesterday, the sun was shining and the skies were clear and blue. So, I decided to take Howard for a brisk walk on the other side of the River Vistula to see the ruins of a Teutonic castle...but we never made it!

We started walking down what we thought was a natural path. As we walked further and further...we started to notice cracked ice and water all around us. We soon realised that we weren't actually standing on a natural path...but rather a natural tributary of the River Vistula!! With the sun shining and the ice melting...we decided not to hang around too long!

A Slippery Warning!

Do be careful here in Toruń at the moment as the snow was beginning to melt but now the temperatures have plummeted again...resulting in a lot of frozen pavements. Wouldn't want to be walking on that doorstep! ;-)

Danger from Above!

At this time of year one must be very careful to keep an eye on what's going on above them. Icicles can be very dangerous...especially when they break!

Retreat

A little January thaw has had an impact on the ice at Marina Bay, forming concentric circles. The Boston skyline can be seen in the distance.

The Ice Flows

Yacht Not

The tide is out at Squantum Yacht Club. The pilings are reflected on water that froze quickly when the tide waters receded. Now that's cold!

New Skates

This smart dad brought a chair to Sailors' Home Pond to help his kids put their skates on and to save his back in doing so. Sailors' Pond is in the middle of a residential section in Wollaston called Beechwood Knoll, which is close to Wollaston Beach. The frigid temps must be keeping most skaters indoors today.

About 60 miles north west of Quincy, mother nature coated everything with a layer of ice. Power has been out for 3 days in some areas causing a hardship for many.
