Flood Tide

Happy Skywatch Friday!  Stormy skies prevailed for most of the week.  The storm surge and astronomical high tides turned this Squantum marsh into a bay area.  Along the horizon you can see Marina Bay and Boston's Prudential and Hancock towers.

Quincy Access TV staff are taking advantage of a beautiful fall day to do some filming on a pier at Marina Bay. "Quincy In Focus" is a news magazine program that recaps city events.

New Urbanism

Marina Point was one of the first buildings to be developed in the 1980s at Marina Bay in Squantum. This upscale condo complex was built on the site of an airfield where famous aviation enthusiasts like Amelia Earhart met to pursue their passion of flying.

More recently many professional athletes like Tom Brady have enjoyed living here.

Thursday is "This Old House Day"

I thought I'd depart with the usual Thursday post and show you some newer housing like these Marina Bay townhouses located in an isolated section of the Squantum peninsula.

The first Harvard Aero Meet took place here in 1910 when it was the Dennison Airport. During World War I the area was occupied by the Victory Shipyard, a satellite of the Fore River Shipyard. The Victory Shipyard completed a vessel in 45 days and set a world record for fastest construction of a ship. Marina Bay is also the site of the old Squantum Naval Air Station, the first Reserve Naval Air Station in the country, established in 1941 by Admiral Bird when he was just a Lieutenant. In the 1950's, Marina Bay was home to the blimps.

Retreat

A little January thaw has had an impact on the ice at Marina Bay, forming concentric circles. The Boston skyline can be seen in the distance.

The Marina Bay Beach Club is one of Northeast's largest outdoor entertainment venues, This seaside nightclub attracts hundreds of night clubbers from the Boston area on any given summer night. Click here for a "cool" picture of the beach club in the wintertime.
