Toruń's landmark cathedral captured through the dirty window of a local city bus as it sped across the bridge. In a way I kind of like the blurred effect!

The Lamp post

Lighting up the streets of Toruń...this is one of many ornate lamp posts. This one stands in Sz.Chełminska on the main route leading into the old town. You can make out the impressive facade of the cathedral in the background.

Flying High!

Flying high above Toruń's old walled city. These pictures were taken a couple of weeks ago by one of my students Ola Muszytowska. She was lucky enough to be taken up in a plane...and even luckier as it was during the volcanic ash chaos. Though of course as it was a light plane and flying much lower, everything was okay!

The Sleeping Birds

This pair of snoozing pigeons were captured late last night in a tree by the cathedral. Didn't use the flash...as didn't want to wake them!

Waiting for the Master

This adorable dog was captured waiting for it's master. Would have been quite a long wait, as its master was actually inside the cathedral taking mass (at least an hour long!).

Waiting for Copernicus

This was the scene yesterday inside St Johns' Cathedral as the crowds waited to welcome the return of Nicolaus Copernicus to Toruń.

COPERNICUS RETURNS TO TORUŃ!

Today, is a very special day here in Toruń...to celebrate the anniversary of Copernicus' birth (here in Toruń many years ago)...the great man himself has returned to our city!

In North Poland, they dug up the remains of Nicolas Copernicus to prove that they were indeed his. They then transported the remains all the way back to Toruń...and today (for one day only) the small sarcophagas with Copernicus' remains are on display inside the Cathedral.

TORUŃ DAILY PHOTO was granted a press pass and given access all areas (thanks to the Marshall's Office) to give you all an exclusive first-hand look at this historical event.

The Snow Keeps on Coming!

Well the temperatures have really fallen here in Toruń. Two nights ago it was a record low of minus 28 degrees celsius! Today the temperature is a little warmer (at minus 15!)...but now the snow is beginning to fall again. Here is a close-up shot of the cathedral taken just a few moments ago.

TORUŃ BY NIGHT: Our Golden Cathedral

This is the dazzling St Johns' Cathedral looming high above. This shot was taken exactly opposite from yesterday's antique shop posting...and reveals exactly what was reflected in the shop window!

Antique Shop Window

This is the late night scene in an antique shop window in the centre of the Old Town. You can just make out the reflection of the cathedral illuminated in the glass.

TORUŃ BY NIGHT: Żeglarska street

We have now turned left from yesterday's post and are two blocks away on the parallel street of Ul. Żeglarska. In the distance you can see the jewel of Toruń...the Cathedral of Saints' Johns with its recently restored clock. The cathedral itself, is currently undergoing extensive renovation. The lavish building on the right is Palac Dąmbskich, which was built in the late 17th Century and is famous for its Baroque facarde. Behind us is yet another city wall gate, and beyond that is the mighty River Vistula.

The Toruń sky lights up!

These are the spectacular views that Toruń Daily Photo witnessed unexpectedly last night. We were in our apartment in the Old Town of Toruń...when suddenly the sky was lit up with a massive fireworks display. Its not uncommon for Toruń to have fireworks (the Poles do like to celebrate) but this time the display was exceptionally amazing. Lasting over 10 mins with huge synchronised fireworks lighting up landmarks such as the Cathedral and the River Vistula; it turned out later that the display was to celebrate Toruń winning 2nd place in the official "Seven wonders of Poland" campaign*. No wonder it was a spectacular display.

*This was a nationwide campaign launched by the leading newspaper Rzeczpospolita to find the seven wonders of Poland. Toruń came second place with its stunning view of the panorama of the old town across the river Vistula.

Scaffolding

This is the view of the Cathedral of Saints' Johns under scaffolding. It is in the middle of a mass restoration, which has already taken a couple of years. The restorers are taking one part of the cathedral step by step. The finished result is well worth it...as the cathedral will look asyoung as the day it was built!

KL or Toruń?

This is the postcard of the Petronas Towers (that I won in Edwin's recent competition) in front of Toruń's very own landmark...Saints' Johns' Cathedral.
