Forever running, Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah, GA

I've given myself the liberty of dipping into albums of photos that aren't limited to the Lowcountry on Tuesdays. This evening's photo isn't from too far down the coast - Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Georgia. It is an incredible cemetery and should be on the list for anyone who enjoys wandering in historic cemeteries. This statue of a joyful runner struck me as particularly unusual. Run on Julie! It's refreshing to see such a happy face running between the tombstones.

The tomb isn't as old as most are at Bonaventure and I easily found the obituary: 

Julie Backus Smith: She was a founding member of the Savannah Striders and promoted running in the Savannah area. She ran in the Boston, New York and Grandfather Mountain Marathons on numerous occasions and at the age of 55 she also participated in the Disney World Marathon. At one time in her career she earned the title of fastest female runner in the Savannah area.

Copernicus Perspective

An interesting perspective of the statue of Copernicus...as he gazes across the old town square.

Atlas

An old and rather tired looking Atlas. Not just because he's carrying the world but because this statue is in much need of some tender loving care. Let's hope it gets renovated soon. The statue stands on top of a pharmacy building in Ul. Szeroka.

The man who made Toruń!

Meet Toruń's most famous citizen...Mr Nicolas Copernicus. This statue of him, situated in the old town square has become a very popular meeting point for Toruń's citizens.

Gateway to Toruń

This statue stands high on the top of the gateway leading into the west side of the old market square. What I love about Toruń is that you should always look up...as there are loads of quirky statues and architectural features.

Machine vs. Beast!

A few days ago these young Polish lads were seen having fun pushing this elaborate looking-motorcycle in the Old Town. They needed several guys to actually push it around the old square...as the engine didn't work. It couldn't go far...but it was still a real nice set of wheels. Here they are comparing it to Toruń's famous asinine scultpure...the legendary 'Toruń Donkey'!

Church Statue

This interesting statue stands at the entrance to Kościół Św.Jakuba (Saint Jacob's Church) near the New Market Square. This picture was taken yesterday evening just as the sun was setting...creating a soft, warm glow on the red bricks.

The Impatient Dog Statue

This new statue stands at the end of Małe Garbary as it joins onto Ul.Szeroka. It depicts a young girl with a basket of gingerbread. At her feet an impatient little dog tries to get her attention.

In the past few years, many quirky statues and sculptures have popped up throughout town.

High Above

One thing you notice about Toruń is the large amount of statues dotted around the city. Some of them are hidden and you may need to look up to see them. This one can be found high above atop an old building on Ul. Szeroka (the main street of Toruń). It's very graceful and classical but does need a bit of a clean-up (thanks to all those pesky pigeons!!).

These 3 fine sculptures (can you spot the owl?) sit high above an impressive building which houses the Toruń Science Society.

The Knight in Shining Armour

This knight has been standing, watching over the bustling street of Most Pauliński for many years. A few years ago it was restored and will no doubt continue to watch over the street for many more years to come.

Lost his Head but Lose your Mind!

Sad to see that the quirky statues and sculptures around Toruń are being subjected to mindless vandalism. A lot of work and time was put into making these and they are destroyed in a matter of seconds by some drunken idiots! You know who you are...you should be ashamed of yourselves!!

A Snowy Copernicus

Well the snow doesn't seem to want to go away and with the latest news coming from the UK it sounds as if we're not the only ones having to deal with inches and inches of snow. Wonder what Copernicus would make of his new white hat and scarf!!

Flute Playing Statue

Rutledge Ave., Charleston, S.C.

My friend Leah emailed me a few weeks ago when she was trying to track down a flute playing statue of a young boy. I knew I'd seen one but couldn't place the location. This evening I walked past him and had to grab a picture through the fence at Ashley Hall girl's school on Rutledge Ave.

Wow, that was quite a rain storm, kids! I was glad to be safely home listening to it all.

The list of quirky statues in Toruń is growing every month. Here is a new one situated surprise surprise above a pen/stationary shop on the corner of Sz.Chełminska and Ul. Szeroka.

Theme Day: Statues

TORUŃ DAILY PHOTO has shown this cat statue before...but as today is the CDP's theme day it's a perfect excuse to show it again...and why not? As it's such a unique sculpture; perched high above the square of Toruń.

Taken from the town hall's tower, this is a much closer perspective of the cat than our previous post (http://torundailyphoto.blogspot.com/2010/01/cat-on-hot-tin-roof.html) and it reveals that the cat has recieved a somewhat unpleasant makeover by some pigeons!!!

The Pigeon & The Astronomer

Copernicus is Toruń's number one son...and quite rightly so they have cashed in on the fact that the great astronomer was born here. The famous gingerbread is named after him, as is the university and there is also a hotel named in his honour.

Here is a view of the famous Copernicus statue...albeit from an unusual perspective from high up in the Town Hall tower.

The Apteka Atlas!

Looming high above the main thoroughfare that is Ul.Szeroka is Toruń's very own Atlas. But wait...that is not a globe that he is carrying...but a ball that simply says 'APTEKA'. 'Apteka' is Polish for 'pharmacy'. And yes you've guessed it there is a pharmacy in that building under him. A real original and classical form of advertising. We like it!

Cat on the Hot Tin Roof

This metal cat is soon becoming one of Toruń's most famous yet quirky additions. Perched high above the town square...there is no real reason why it is there. I guess it got lost chasing one of the many pigeons flying overhead! ;-)
