Classic Greek

Quincy's City Hall was built in the 1840s in the classic Greek Revival style.  It was built with Quincy granite by master stone workers.  You can see a close-up of one ionic column here.  The crumbling interior  is finally being renovated.  It is on the National Register of Historic Places.

This Tudor/Jacobethan Revival Adams Building in Quincy Center was designed by William J. Beal in 1880, and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Mulching

The flower beds in Quincy Center are being made ready for summer plantings by the city's Parks & Public Works Dept.  In the background you can see the new site of Quincy College at Presidents Place.  Have a great weekend everyone!

Golden Tower

The First Parish Church of the Presidents in Quincy Center has had its bell tower and clock refurbished just in time for a spring unveiling. The gold really glistens in the sun.

Waiting For The Bell To Toll

Scaffolding was erected this past July to restore the bell tower of the United First Parish Church (Church of the Presidents) in Quincy Center. Restoration should be completed by November at a cost of $600,000. This magnificent edifice, built of Quincy granite donated by John Adams, was designed by Alexander Parris and completed in 1828. "Shopperstown USA" Resurfaces

This Touraine sign saw the light of day once again after the demolition of the Quincy Fair Mall. Touraine's, opened for business in 1949 and sold woman's apparel at its Hancock Street location for about 30 years until malls lured shoppers away from the city.

I wonder if the Historical Society will procure and preserve this piece of Quincy's history.

Tourist Ready

Quincy Center lampposts are decorated with their seasonal banners and the Church of the Presidents (dome in the background) is awaiting visitors for another tourist season.

There's no place like home, especially in springtime. The Granite Trust Building never looked better to me.

Thursday is "This Old House Day"

The Daniel W. Baxter house, located at 15-17 Phipps Street, is an example of an 1870s double Italianate style house. The detail work around the windows is worth a second look. I'm not a fan of the present color . . . too close to the blue of the sky. This must have been a grand house in its day.

Center View

It's great to see some work being done on the 10-story Granite Trust building, Quincy's art deco gem, built in 1929. Some day I would really like to photograph my city from atop that building . . .

This is Quincy Center during the recent stormy weather. The lights make for a colorful street tapestry on an otherwise dreary day.

Makeover

Presidents Place in Quincy Center recently received a makeover. The visitors' center of the National Park Service is located in this complex of buildings and I see some seasonal decorations are in place. I can't believe how green the grass is for December!

Presidents Place

Presidents Place in Quincy Center houses the visitors center for Quincy. People used to line up around this block for the annual "back-to-school sale at a favorite discount salvage store called the Bargain Center or "bahgy."

If you enlarge this you will see that the girl's hair coordinates with her sweatshirt . . . a fashion statement for sure.
