Thursday is "this old house" Day

The Number 30 Sea Avenue was built by Arthur and Catharine Dunham in the "Prairie Bungalow" Style.  This residence is an elaborate example of this style.  The shaped brackets under the eaves and the segmental openings in the veranda and the all enveloping roof create a fine example of the "Prairie Bungalow" style in Hough's Neck.

Summertime

I can't imagine living far from the coast in the summer.

Island View

Staghorn sumac fills the foreground of this view of Peddocks Island from Nut Island in Houghs Neck.   Nut Island is a 5-acre former island in Boston Harbor that was joined by landfill to Quincy's Houghs Neck peninsula in the 1940s for use as a sewage treatment facility.

Thursday is "This Old House" Day

Today's classic example of a "sea or lake cottage" has a wrap around porch to beat all on these hot, hazy days of summer.  You can almost smell the sea air, can't you?  This simple Queen Anne house, located in Houghs Neck at 32 Bayview Avenue, was built in 1880 as a summer residence.  Houghs Neck was quite the summer resort back when this house was built.

"The Neck"

One square mile is the peninsula area of Houghs Neck as seen from Hingham Harbor.  I really like the houses seen here perched on Great Hill.  It must be great to live there and see the changing sky over the ocean.

Scrapped

The remains of a few old docks are rusting away on Raccoon Island.  There could be a few dollars in that metal . . .

Hike To "Raccoon Island"

Raccoon Island was the destination of yesterday's "Environmental Treasures" walk departing at low tide from Edgewater Drive Beach.  This was community recreation and environmental education at it's best.  I will share more from this outing and more about Raccoon Island in the days to come.

Building On Hold

This is a cottage style house on Edgewater Drive in the Houghs Neck neighborhood. This 1-square mile peninsula used to be a popular summer destination like Cape Cod is now.
