Winter's Finery

Snow not only provides a pristine pathway to the Wollaston Congregational Church but it also dresses the church up in winter's finery.

Both Presidents, John Adams and John Quincy Adams, were lifetime members of the United First Parish Church shown here. Their tombs stand within a crypt in the church. I like returning to photograph this magnificent Greek Revival edifice, built of Quincy granite and designed by Alexander Parris.

The Bethel Church of the Nazarene on Empire Street in Adams Shore completes the "Sunday is for Church" series. The usual Christian symbol of the cross was not seen anywhere near the roof line. However, there were white raised crosses located under each window.

This makes for a total of 41 houses of worship in Quincy, population around 88,000.

This is the new St. Catherine's Greek Orthodox Churchin the neighboring town of Braintree. This church design is not only very beautiful and unique looking for this area but there is also plenty of parking and room to expand. The building in Wollaston, that they used to hold worship in is slowly being converted into high-end condos.

Today's church is the Church of the Good Shepherd, located on the corner of Harvard and West Squantum Streets. I can't help but notice all those wires seemingly competing for air space with the cross.

The First Presbyterian Church, built in 1960 for $500,000 was designed by Boston architect Edward Melville Bridge, a former professor of architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This Classic Revival style church, with a sanctuary large enough to accommodate 320 worshippers, is sited on the rise of Penn's Hill at 270 Franklin Street, just up the street from the birthplaces of John and John Quincy Adams.

St. Chrysostom's Episcopal Church on Hancock Street in North Quincy, began as a mission of Christ's Church in 1892. The church is named after St. Chrysostom, who was an early church father known for his preaching and deep theological knowledge. An ancient legend says that when he was a baby, a swarm of bees landed in his mouth and it was then that he received the gift of preaching. The beehive is used as a symbol throughout the church to represent not only the preacher's gift, but also for people being busy and working for the common good of all; not a bad thing in today's world.
