James Christopher Hill does Folly Beach

Planet Follywood, Folly Beach, S.C.
Artist James Christopher Hill happened upon my photo albums and realized what y'all have known for years, I am a big fan. I take a couple pictures of his mural on Planet Follywood every time I am at the beach. I once asked one of the British Black Cabs to park in front of it just so I could get a shot. Here is his etsy shop with darker fantasy, horror and science fiction paintings to steampunk designs and images and his gallery web site.

As far as I am concerned I keep going back to my old favorites of his work - the stars on the side of the building on Folly Beach. Thanks for the smiles James Christopher Hill!

My Kitchen Helper

Mural on canvas

I've been decorating my home with some of my old photos on canvas. Canvas is perfect when the original is a picture painted on textured wall and doesn't need expensive framing. I've become a frequent costumer of Canvas 4 Life and I've been tickled every time I unwrap an order. You upload and size your own image.

Does anyone remember this old Charleston gal? She was painted on a restaurant supply warehouse on upper Meeting St. She is long gone from Meeting St. and now lives with me. I am hoping she will come out of retirement and wash some of my dishes.

This is a tasty burger!

Samuel Jackson eats a tasty burger, Big Gun Burgers, Charleston, S.C.

I heard Samuel Jackson had made an appearance in town and tracked him down this morning. He is hanging out at the back of Big Gun Burgers on Calhoun St.

Link to the related video clip from Pulp Fiction if you don't mind a bit of language and violence.

Slaying Dragons

Taco Boy, Huger St., Charleston, S.C.
I haven't participated in Mural Mondays but according to this image search, a lot of people do: Mural Mondays. I do appreciate Taco Boy, both downtown and on Folly for their decorative art work. Thanks for taking the trouble to keep me intertained folks! The two I am featuring today are both at the Huger St. location.

For bonus smiles check out this Star Wars Taxidermy. I'd been wondering about making a giant paper mache mounted song bird head and came across those masterpieces.

A sophisticated urban concept with the classic elegance of the

hosting a wedding ceremony or private party
  • An elegant & unique event venue for up to 250 guests

Scaredy Cat

Murals at Avondale, Charleston, S.C.

Scaredy Cat

I guess I’m just a scaredy cat …
I am afraid of everything.
Sometimes I almost jump a mile
when I hear a telephone ring.

It's even scary in my room
so I’ve got to have a light.
Who knows, there might be monsters
under my bed at night!

C.J. Heck

Aaack! This was a new mural I spotted this morning behind the shops at Avondale. Freaky kinda cat!

Gone Fishin'

Avondale Murals, Charleston, S.C.
Here is a sweet one about Going Fishin':

Meanwhile if I am sitting here posting fishin' tunes I'm not out walking like I should be, am I?

Commute, 8

We're heading east on Silverlake Blvd. in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, approaching the corner of Reservoir St. This mural is on the back of what I think is still Tom's Burgers. Tom's is on a corner-shaped spit because really, where Silverlake meets Reservoir it also meets Parkman Avenue which, if we turn left on it, takes us behind ourselves to Sunset Blvd, under which we've just driven.

I love that sentence, even if you don't.

I didn't find out the name of the artist, but I did find Jubilee.

Update:
Thanks to Adele for discovering the name of the artist: Dcypher CBS

Resolve not to....

Planet Follywood, Folly Beach, S.C.
We are NOT giving up Coronas for New Years. That might be an easier way to do resolutions. What are you NOT giving up?

Lincoln Heights: Blessings

While in Lincoln Heights we stopped at Sacred Heart Church (est. 1897) for a few minutes and listened to the high school kids sing. The church was packed. It was noon-ish on a Wednesday. It was hard not to be charmed.

Sacred Heart School is across from the church. Karin tells the story of the mural here. It's about family and community, lives long and short and intertwined.

Manny estimates Lincoln Heights to be about 70% Hispanic (mostly of Mexican heritage), 20% Asian and 10% "everything else." Surely I'm generalizing, but 70% Hispanic/mostly Mexican is likely to mean a lot of Catholics.

Many of the markets in Lincoln Heights (except the Asian ones) have a representation of Our Lady of Guadalupe painted on the exterior. Always a lot of color; always Our Lady.

PLUS I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT to include this in yesterday's post about Lincoln Heights architecture!

I haven't forgotten it's Thanksgiving, no indeed. I'm thankful every day for too many things to mention. Really, you don't want me to start. Once I get started I think of more and I can't stop.

So I'll just say here and in keeping with this post that I'm thankful for the diversity in our world and our nation, not to mention in Los Angeles and Pasadena and especially in my neighborhood of Northwest Pasadena. What a great place to live.

Happy Thanksgiving! May you have many blessings to count.

The Colourful Angels

Toruń is famous for its angels. After all it is the angel that is the symbol of the city. These colourful angels can be seen on a mural in the playground of School Number 1 in the old town. At first glance you may think the angels are flying over the panorama of Toruń...but in fact it's a skyline made up of many famous landmarks from around the world. There's the Statue of Liberty, The Pyramids and even Stonehenge. How many others can you spot?

The Peirogi Mural

Pierogarnia Stary Toruń is a popular eatery in town. It specialises in pierogis...or dumplings. To be honest, the word dumpling doesn't give it justice. The oven-baked pierogis can be best described as a cornish pasty!!

As you can see the restaurant has decorated its exterior with this eye-catching mural.
