Zooming down Market Street

For this photograph I used a zoom lens to focus towards the lower end of the road and cropped off the bottom of the picture. The result is a foreshortening of the perspective which gives a heightened sense of how busy Market Street can be on a Saturday afternoon.

Shop signs in Clarendon Place

There's a plethora of signs on the shops in Clarendon Place. Note how the "sales" signs on the "Sofas to go" shop and the Discount furniture shop across the road are the same. That's because they are the same business.

Market Place Slush

A blanket of snow had fallen overnight and though the roads were gritted and passable, the pavements in town on Saturday were icy and treacherous underfoot.

The Santander Bank on the corner of Market Place and Hamnett Street was formerly an Abbey branch.

On the right, £-stretcher, facing the bank, was formerly Woolworth's.

See how it looked in Clarendon Place on Hyde DP Xtra.

Another change of use

Formerly the Crown, a Robinson's pub, it closed in 2009.

It was converted in 2010 into commercial premises at the front on Market Street and flats behind on Nelson Street.

In 2012 it opened as a ladies only fitness centre but they have since moved to different premises lower down Market Street.

Now it is occupied by "Ta Tech Solutions".

Z is for Zone

The "Shoe Zone" store in Clarendon Mall had a sale on last week with a huge 50% off sign.

Look carefully though and you'll notice it actually says "Up to" 50%.

I did in fact buy a pair of shoes there on Saturday but I certainly didn't pay much less for them (if anything) than I'd have paid before the sale.

According to Wikipedia this is one of around 800 branches throughout the UK and Ireland and the Leicester based company sells approximately 30 million pairs of footwear per year, just under 1 pair a second.

Market Street Shadows

Tha shadows are falling across the bottom of Market Street as yet another business bites the dust.

Waterways bathroom and tiles showroom has now closed down and the premises are up for rent. On the left is the Donnybrook Medical Centre by the bus station. The shuttered shop on the right was once the surgery of Dr Shipman.

East Coast Hair & Beauty Internet Cafe Signs

These signs are on the wall above the "East Coast Hair & Beauty Internet Cafe".

The premises used to house a pawnbrokers but now there is a sign above the shop advertising a solicitor's business. Maybe they use the offices on the first floor.

Shops on Manchester Road

Compare if you will with the scene in October 2010.

"Peter's Beds" is still going strong at one end.

So is the Indian restaurant and takeaway "Saffron" next to the "KwikFit" tyre and exhaust centre.

In the middle though the "Big Bite Pizza" has changed to the "Hyde Kebab House" (although the neon sign appears to be the same and the shop seems to be boarded up rather than shuttered) and "Hyde Domestics" has been replaced by a tattoo and piercing parlour called "To The Point".

Weekend Reflections on Market Street

Reflected in the window of "Subway" is the "Cash Generator" store that replaced "Rumbelows" after they went bust many years ago.

Newly opened next to "Subway" is "Café at 64" the new location for Cordwell's Café after their Market Place premises were taken over by Ladbroke's.

Their window not only reflects "Cash Generator" but also the HSBC (formerly Midland) Bank.

Check out the view from the opposite direction - The pedestrian crossing and the bank from inside "Subway" - in my post from May 2007.

Yellow Scaffolding

Scaffolding is being erected around the Zeenath building on the corner of Market Street and Port Street. Not only are the scaffolders wearing high-visibility yellow jackets but so are the bottom pieces of scaffolding.

Fancy Dress and Fish and Chips

A diverse group of shops on Clarendon Street.

Creeping in on the left is "Headzaklys", one of Hyde's numerous Gent's Hairdresser's.

Next is "Homefair Blinds".

"The Lingerie and Fancy Dress Shop" used to be called lingerie bliss and before that it was Frilly Milly's.

Currently it has a Halloween display in its window.

"Bosuns Fish Restaurant and Take Away" looks much the same as it did in August 2006 although I understand there has been a change of ownership since then.

Above "Bosuns" is a "Tanning Studio".

Shadows across Stockport Road

A tree throws its shadow across Stockport Road.

The Jungfrau hairdressers seemed a good "J" idea for a contribution to ABC Wednesday.

I walked up here a few weeks ago only to discover that the sign over the door had been taken down. Whether the business is changing hands, closing down or just being renovated and awaiting a new sign, I've no idea.

I was going to post it then anyway but as it turned out a more important event needed mention that day so I've saved this for a contribution to Shadow Shot Sunday.

Lord Kitchener points his finger

As I posted a year ago, the building on the corner of Milk Street and Water Street was once the The Nag's Head.

Now it has opened as a decoratoring supplies store and has enlisted the help of Lord Kitchener with its advertising.

See Hyde DP Xtra for a wider view.

Answer to last Thursday's question

Last Thursday I asked readers to tell me what was on Charles's Terrace.

Lucy wrote
Does Bennett Street / Ashton Road count as 'Where'? (You had it in a previous photo.) It's a 'Betfred' now. (Also one of your photos!) I expect,if you had a 'search this site' option, we'd be able to find out what it used to be too!

Now there is actually a "search this site" option - there is blogger's own on the very top left of the page. Also, if you scroll down to the very bottom of the page there is a search box which will search across all my blogs.

Neither of them though would have brought you the answer as the only place I've published the photo before is on the Geograph website.

Betfred is what is locally known as a "bookies" or more properly as a "betting shop" or "turf accountant" although the latter name stems from the time when about the only thing people bet on was horse-racing. Not being a gambler I've never been in one so don't what goes on inside.

No-one has told me what the premises were originally. I don't know but suspect it was probably another pub.
