A Snowy Copernicus

Well the snow doesn't seem to want to go away and with the latest news coming from the UK it sounds as if we're not the only ones having to deal with inches and inches of snow. Wonder what Copernicus would make of his new white hat and scarf!!

The Pigeon & The Astronomer

Copernicus is Toruń's number one son...and quite rightly so they have cashed in on the fact that the great astronomer was born here. The famous gingerbread is named after him, as is the university and there is also a hotel named in his honour.

Here is a view of the famous Copernicus statue...albeit from an unusual perspective from high up in the Town Hall tower.

COPERNICUS RETURNS TO TORUŃ!

Today, is a very special day here in Toruń...to celebrate the anniversary of Copernicus' birth (here in Toruń many years ago)...the great man himself has returned to our city!

In North Poland, they dug up the remains of Nicolas Copernicus to prove that they were indeed his. They then transported the remains all the way back to Toruń...and today (for one day only) the small sarcophagas with Copernicus' remains are on display inside the Cathedral.

TORUŃ DAILY PHOTO was granted a press pass and given access all areas (thanks to the Marshall's Office) to give you all an exclusive first-hand look at this historical event.

Your comments and thoughts about the return of Nicolaus Copernicus to Toruń will be greatly appreciated!

Copernicus not only moved the Earth...he helped move the snow too!

Wow, today's post certainly has the claim of having the longest title ever on Toruń Daily Photo. Many are probably wondering what has Copernicus got to do with today's post? You may know of the popular saying that Copernicus stopped the sun and moved the Earth. If you weren't familiar with this; it is inscriped in Latin on the plinth of Copernicus' statue here in Toruń.

Still, what has Copernicus got to do with moving all this snow? Well...on Friday there will be a huge event here at Toruń's Cathedral...and the local cleaners were out in force to remove most of the snow around the cathedral.

I won't give too many secrets away about the event just yet. But all I can reveal is that the great astronomer will be the main focal point of the event...literally! Tune in on Friday to learn more!

TORUŃ BY NIGHT: Ul. Kopernika

We have now turned right from yesterday's picture into Ul. Piekary, heading back towards the centre of the Old Town. Here you can see the view as we cross over Ul. Kopernika on the right. This famous street is so called as it was here, where the legendary astronomer Copernicus was allegedly born. You can just make out his birthplace in the far distance on the right. The bright yellow building on the left is the 3-star Hotel Gotyk.

The night tour continues ever furthermore...

Toruń Gingerbread

As well as being the birthplace of Copernicus, Toruń is famous for its delicious perniki (gingerbread). Tourists flock to the city to sample the fine moorish taste and there is even a gingerbread museum, where you can make your own tasty souvenir. Delicious indeed...but the receipe is top secret...so it would be impossible to recreate it again at home. The most famous gingerbread company is Kopernik (named appropriately after Copernicus). Their large factory lies to the east of the city. However, it is very difficult to get inside and tours are out of the question! Shame, really as a Cadbury World style attraction would certainly go down well here.

The picture shows one of the 4 gingerbread shops in the Old Town of Toruń. Expect queues of tourists on a daily basis lining up to buy all the many varieties of gingerbread!

Copernicus comes alive!

Here is the great man himself Nicolaus Copernicus in front of the famous statue that commemorates his life. But why is he carrying a bag of money in his right hand?!!! Well...OK...its not Copernicus...but a university student dressed up as him!!!

This weekend, it was the annual student piss-up "Juwenalia" where students dress up in costumes and literally beg for their drink money!!! It's funny as most of the citizens of Toruń willingly give their cash away to the students...but its a different matter with the homeless. Then again the students do only beg once a year!!!

If the young student behind this costume happens to visit Toruń Daily Photo, please leave a comment and let us know how your night went!!!

Copernicus and Town Hall

We cannot have a website about Toruń without showing its most famous resident - Nicolaus Copernicus. After all, the astronomer, who discovered that the Sun (rather than the Earth) is at the centre of our solar system, was born here in Toruń back in 1473. Today, the city prides itself on this knowledge and many things are named after him (including the city's university, a renowned gingerbread factory and most recently a new shopping mall).

Here the statue of Copernicus (erected in the 19th Century) stands proudly this morning under the gothic splendour of the Town Hall tower. As you can see Spring is still here!!!
