Seeing Theater in Sierra Madre

I had tickets to see Incident at Vichy at the Sierra Madre Playhouse the other night. John is in pre-production and can't tear himself away from the desk. I knew who I wanted to invite in his stead: Adele of Seeing Sierra Madre: One Photo at a Time.

Sierra Madre is a charming corner of the San Gabriel Valley. Adele is excellent company. My friend Karyn O'Bryant is a fine actor and so is everyone else in the cast of Incident at Vichy (that's one reason why it was a Critic's Choice in the Los Angeles Times). Add them together and it was a great evening.

Across the street from the Playhouse there's this cocktail joint called The Buccaneer. You can see the Playhouse marquee reflected in the window. Adele and I didn't go in because we were both tired, but the place has a reputation for fun. Snotty Scotty and the Hankies play there, so I don't know what more you could ask.

Sierra Madre is Adele's territory (not that any of us are territorial around here), so I'll let Adele give you the pic from the theater (doesn't Karyn look marvelous?). But we had such a good evening. Many, many thanks to Karyn and the cast and crew of Incident at Vichy and the Sierra Madre Playhouse.

Plundering for Philanthropy

Thanks to the Buccaneer Restaurant for offering to donate 10% from their proceeds on Talk-Like-A-Pirate day to the American Heart Association. It's a worthy cause "Me Hearties"! I appreciate their support and enjoyed a fine dinner with friends.

Calling all Pirates! 9/19

Calling all Pirates! Sunday, 9/19 is the high holy day for Pirates - National Talk Like a Pirate Day. The folks at Talk-Like-a-Pirate encourage Plundering for Philanthropy and the Buccaneer Restaurant has jumped on board, offering to donate 10% of their day's proceeds to the American Heart Association. Spread the word! This may be the most delicious fund raising we've ever done. Rally your family and friends, me Hearties!

If you are inclined to dress the part, gift certificate awards will be given at 6 p.m. to best adult and child pirates. I took all these photos in the restaurant so be sure to bring your camera. There is a real human skull over the bar. Aaaaargh!

Teachers, military, health care workers etc. get an extra 15% discount this month so bring your ID. See you there.

Ahoy there, Matey

The Buccaneer Restaurant Bar & Museum, Faber St., Charleston, S.C.

I've been here and I've been there today but right now I am happily snug in my favorite corner of my couch uploading pictures that show my path today.

These shots are from my first stop at the Buccaneer Restaurant & Museum on Faber St. I went down before the restaurant opened this morning and because I am the luckiest person in Charleston, when I asked if they would remove the glass in front of the large display case with the pirate artifacts - they did. They have an incredible collection rivaling any museum and I got to hold these old pieces in my hands.

When I went to the 21st Century Photographer's Club meeting this week, I suggested the Buccaneer as a photo field trip so my idea this morning was to do a trial run and see how it would work and I was very excited. I think there are all kinds of cool photo ops in the restaurant, from ship models, real weapons and pirate flags to a human skull. The manager welcomes the interest so I think we can work it out. Fun!
