You may know that City Daily Photo is a worldwide blogging community. We have a few rules, but they're pretty loose.
For instance, we're not required to participate in theme days.
But I like theme days. They connect me with the other bloggers who make up this fantastic group. With our new City Daily Photo portal, we've added more (optional) theme days this year, some in which I may or may not participate in. Of. Which. What?
I used to link you to our newest member blog on theme day, but our new website works differently and I don't know which is the newest. So I'll just send us all to one I haven't visited yet. Today I think I'll go say hi to Yogyakarta Daily Photo.
The photo above: looking up from the parking lot behind Little Flower Candy Company, where I had lunch and bought the most delicious, handmade sea salt caramels ever.

Navel Gazing
Boz at Devil's Gate Dam, October 2009
City Daily Photo didn't have a theme day on January 1st, so today we're celebrating The Festival of the Belly Button by contemplating our navels. The question I'm to ask myself is, over the time I've been blogging, how has my photography changed?
Boz has eyelashes, November 2012
Mostly, two things:
1) I'm more aware of little details than I used to be.
and
2) I am now more interested in telling a story or conveying an emotion than showing you a thing.
You'll find the links to other worldwide navel gazers here.

Theme Day: My Street
It's the first of the month and time for City Daily Photo's monthly theme day. "My Street" is the theme we selected this time (democratically, as always).
I won't tell you much about my street because it's our private Brigadoon. We love living here. We have the most wonderful neighbors, and we know we're fortunate to have found this quiet, friendly spot to call home.
City Daily Photo has a new website, where you can find daily photo blogs from all over the world. The new site administrators continue to shine it up as a work in progress. Take a look at today's theme participants, or pick a blog in a remote land and explore.

Theme Day: Water's Edge
sometimes the watershed is wet
Conveniently timed with City Daily Photo's theme day, Pasadena's Department of Water and Power**, in collaboration with the Pasadena Museum of History, is launching a free exhibit at the Central Library entitled, Celebrating Pasadena's Water Centennial.
We live at the "water's edge" in Pasadena and that edge is receding, so I'm grateful for this extended opportunity to learn about where we stand.
sometimes the watershed is dry
City Daily Photo has a new website! I used to give you a count of our worldwide members, but when we lost our previous site we lost our main way of staying in contact. And apparently many of those blogs were not active. Right now, Julie from Sydney, Australia is working with Peter from Sunshine Coast Daily Photo (also in Oz, thanks for the corrections, folks) to put it all back together. As of today's count, they had re-recruited 211* active blogs.

Theme Day: People Watching
I don't often photograph people. It's not that people aren't interesting, it's that I'm shy of invading their space. But last spring's LitFest Pasadena was an excellent people-watching opportunity. Folks expected to be photographed. At least the authors did.
I was seated on the ground, getting ready to take pictures of an author panel, when young-and-handsome here popped into my frame. I snapped the shutter. Junior was obviously not watching the same people I was watching.
City Daily Photo, last I checked, is over 1400 blogs worldwide. We will have a new website one of these days, but in the mean time, please visit our Facebook Page to find your favorite blogs around the world. You can also visit Julie's Page to see who's participating in today's theme.

Theme Day: Numbers
Today's City Daily Photo theme day is "numbers." I knew I'd eventually have a reason to post this shot. This old license plate was part of the eclectic decor at Perdue's barbecue restaurant, a great little place that had an all-too-short tenure on Orange Grove Blvd. near Los Robles. I guess their timing wasn't great, but the food sure was.
City Daily Photo is still having website problems but we still have the nice linky page, thanks to Julie of Sydney Eye. Speaking of eyes, I like telling you about new blogs and lately I've been enjoying Cambridge, UK. Rath Savinders has quite an eye.

Theme Day: Chimneys
I'm not sure this is an actual chimney, but it's in the expected place so I'm going for it. See if you can spot it next time you're in the passenger seat on Orange Grove Blvd. on the east side of Lake Avenue.
Today is theme day, City Daily Photo's tradition for the first of the month. The website's in a tizzy right now so check out the participants in today's theme at the site Julie set up here.
Ordinarily on theme day I invite you to visit our newest member, but today I think you ought to visit Julie at Sydney Eye and say hello.

Theme Day: Bakeries

I thought I was going to miss this theme day. I thought I didn't have any bakery shots, and I knew I didn't have time to go get one.
But wait! This is why I never throw anything away.
Two years ago, I took this photo of student chefs from Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Pasadena as they worked to help create the cake for Pasadena's 124th birthday.
It was tempting to steal one of those sugar/frosting roses. It's not like the chefs were paying any attention to me. I could have gotten away with it.
Here's the post I wrote about the experience. I posted more photos on Overdog. I've been neglecting poor Overdog. Ah, well.
City Daily Photo is now 1463 blogs strong. Bellis will be thrilled to know that the newest member of the fold is Cambridge, UK! Stop by and give a hearty welcome. Click here to visit the other theme day participants.

Theme Day: Cobblestones
There may be cobblestones in Pasadena. I don't remember any offhand but that doesn't mean they're not here. The city was founded in the late 1800s and vestiges of the early town remain.
But mostly when I think of the stones we walk on I think of what we sometimes call "river rocks." They come from the Arroyo Seco and the mountains as well, and they're everywhere: lining walkways, decorating columns and adorning every other garden. Pasadenish have been building with them for the last century. Entire homes are made of them. They're part of our architectural vernacular.
This path leads off the main road into the Angeles National Forest north of NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL). I haven't climbed it in quite some time. Boz declines to take it anymore (it's a bit steep) and for now I don't mind, because most of that greenery you see is poison oak. But I think the photo gives you an idea of our rocks. They're embedded in each woodland path, every trail, even in the history of our Pasadena home.
City Daily Photo's website was the victim of -- well, not nice people. So the wonderful Julie of Sydney set up a special page for us to use this time around. I posted a little early this time to make mine work.
If you'd like to see how other CDP bloggers around the world are handling the cobblestones theme, go here. And many thanks to Julie!

Theme Day: Electricity
Today when I think of electricity I think of what it would be like not to have it. The Dark Ages, for example, were really, really dark. Imagine having to ride from, say, Oxford to London (Londinium) in 500 A.D. At night. I mean, no street lights. Not one!
(I don't think the Dark Ages were called the Dark Ages in Pasadena, but it was just as dark here.)

Theme Day: Animals
Well, I think it's very weird that a month of 2012 has already passed and it's February 1st, but it is, so it's time for another City Daily Photo theme day. This month's theme is animals.
How do you like my flare? I like it. If you enlarge the picture you might see a couple of contrails in the sky, too.
I'd love to give you exotic animals but Pasadena doesn't have a zoo and I'll be damned if I'm going up into the hills to chase mountain lions. However, if you click on the other participants in today's theme, I bet you'll find some fantastic animals! After all, City Daily Photo is now 1444 blogs strong, worldwide. Our newest member is Jersey Photos from the Channel Islands. And as far as theme day and Jersey Photos goes, let me just say great minds think alike.

Theme Day: Photo of the Year 2011
Happy New Year! It's a big day here on Pasadena Daily Photo, because not only is it a theme day, it's also PDP's birthday. As of today, I've been doing this for four years.
I am insane.
I choose this photo as my Picture of the Year because it was popular, not just with commenters but with me, too. I like the happy, nostalgic world it shows. Funny--that world actually exists on my block. I called the post The Treasures on Your Block based on a series of books by Ann Scheid about Pasadena's residential architecture.
In my mind, there were other contenders for photo of the year, among them:
Hahamongna Upset Overturned
Unruly Posse
A Stubbornly Persistent Illusion
Bulgarini
A Pattern to Follow
If you have other favorites I don't mind if you mention them.
City Daily Photo has a theme day the first of every month. We're now 1436 blogs strong! The newest member is My 365 Manhattan.
Many CDP blogs participate in theme day. Click here to check out those that do.
And thank you for your visits. You're the reason I do this, which sounds like I'm saying "you make me insane." But of course that's not what I mean. I only mean you justify my insanity, and for that I'm grateful.

Theme Day: Action Shot
(see below for wind advisory press releases from the Pasadena Public Information Officer, including phone numbers and emergency instructions, as they come in)
Today's City Daily Photo theme is "action shot. This picture of a white crane coming in for a landing at Hahamongna Watershed Park was a lucky shot for me. I have countless action shots of my dog, Boz, running at Hahamongna. They're fun, but it's not the same.
City Daily Photo is now 1429 blogs strong. Sure, some people post more "daily" than others. But pick a city, almost any city, and there's bound to be a CDP blog in it or near it. Our newest addition is Sohar, Oman. Stop by and give a welcome.
Not all CDP bloggers take part in theme day. It's not a requirement. It's just fun. Click here to view thumbnails for today's participants.
WIND ADVISORY UPDATES
Outage Map
1:30 pm
The Pasadena Police Department has surveyed major streets for fallen trees, downed power lines and damaged facilities.
Of 200 buildings in Pasadena damaged by the wind storm, 42 units have been red-tagged – 40 units in one building alone – and six have been yellow-tagged. Residents of red-tagged units have been evacuated. Thirty-six residents are at a temporary shelter at Robinson Park Center, 1081 N. Fair Oaks Ave. California Assemblyman Anthony Portantino graciously provided lunch to the families today. The local Red Cross is assisting at the shelter.
Lamanda Park Branch Library and Hill Avenue Branch Library have sustained downed trees and minor damage. All Pasadena public libraries are closed today; it will be determined later today if libraries will open tomorrow.
Public schools, Maranatha High School, Pasadena City College, Fuller Theological Seminary and Northwest College are closed today; closures tomorrow will be announced.
The Pasadena Fire Department responded to wind-related fire incidents in the 100 block of Penn Street where a house fire resulted in four injuries; the 1200 block of Hudson Avenue where 40 residents were evacuated due a large tree falling into the structure; and the 900 block of Del Mar Boulevard where seven residents were evacuated due to a structure fire. The injured residents were transported to a local hospital.
Four hundred fifty public street trees are down or damaged. This figure does not include trees in parks and Brookside Golf Course, where assessments are not complete. The Pasadena Public Works Department is being assisted by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works to clear downed trees in the public right of way.
By 11 a.m. today 30 percent of major streets had been cleared of fallen trees and other debris. Crews expect to complete the work on major streets by the end of the day today. All but eight of 106 impact traffic signals have been restored to normal operations.
Power is being restored to customers throughout Pasadena. Currently about 3,791 customers – about six percent – are without power; at 9 a.m. more than 5,000 were without power.
Pasadena ARTS buses are not running today. Dial-A-Ride is available only for non-emergency medical appointments.
Animal control through the Pasadena Humane Society is taking care of animals that are loose as a result of downed fences.
On-street parking regulations are not being enforced today except in Red Flag restricted areas, red curbs, loading zones and disabled parking spaces. Enforcement of overnight parking restrictions will be suspended tonight except in Red Flag areas.
The Pasadena Public Health Department encourages anyone who has been clearing debris to make sure they have up-to-date Tetanus shots from the department at 1845 N. Fair Oaks Ave. or a private physician.
The Pasadena Fire Department encourages everyone to make sure their disaster preparedness kits are updated and to have fresh batteries in flashlights.
If power goes out, keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed to preserve perishables.
A local state of emergency was declared early this morning and the Emergency Operations Center was activated overnight.
Pasadenans are advised to stay home if possible until the wind situation improves because some roads are impassable and many trees remain fragile throughout the community. Many streets are barricaded due to fallen trees and/or downed power lines.
The Zero Waste Strategic Plan workshops, the World AIDS Day event and the General Plan workshop in Spanish scheduled for today have been canceled.
City officials urge people not to call 9-1-1 or other emergency numbers unless you have a life-threatening emergency. Do not approach or attempt to move downed power lines. Pasadena Water and Power crews are responding as quickly as possible; they are not responding to downed cable TV lines.
Two information phone lines have been established for the public to report fallen trees and downed power lines – (626) 564-0199 and (626) 564-0299 – and the city website at www.cityofpasadena.net is being updated as necessary.
Additional updates will be provided throughout the day.
Pasadena residents and others who want to sign up for local alerts can go to www.cityofpasadena.net/fire/PLEAS or www.nixle.com.

Theme Day: Fences
The first of the month is our City Daily Photo theme day, and this time it's "fences."
I thought I'd get creative and run by the pawn shop, but ours is a venerated business in a historic building (not exactly a fence). Perhaps I'd locate some skilled athletes and photograph them with their epees. Nevermind. I got caught up in the Halloween rush.
So here's a fence. It's even a little spooky.
I got so caught up in the rush, in fact, that I forgot Halloween was Zen Monday and here it is Tuesday and we're having theme day. So tomorrow will be a historic Zen Wednesday, the second one in PDP history. (The first was in June of last year.)
City Daily Photo is a worldwide family of bloggers like me who love to photograph their hometowns. As of today, we're 1433 strong. Our newest member is MyHelsinkiCity, Finland. Click here to see how other CDP bloggers have interpreted today's theme.

Theme Day: Mystery Object
I was all ready to post another library and I remembered: today is City Daily Photo theme day! It's a good thing I remembered because--well, I don't know what would happen if I forgot, probably nothing, but it's too late now.
I know at least one person who can tell us where today's mystery object is, but can anyone tell us what it is? What I'd especially like to know, once I find out what it is, is how old it is. Whatever it is, I like to think it's an antique.
City Daily Photo is a worldwide family of blogs like mine, where people express their home cities through photos and commentary. We're now 1424 blogs strong and growing all the time. It's a good trend. We're a friendly bunch, and we need as much global friendliness as we can get. Our newest member is Ginnels Gates and Ghosts in York, Great Britain and it looks like a fine blog.

Theme Day: Perspective
Today's theme at City Daily Photo is "perspective." That can be a technique used in art and architecture to show distance or elevation. It can also be how you look at things. For instance, this could be a hole in a hedge, through which you view a field of small avocado trees being watered by a sprinkler. Or it could be a window into the past, to the days before Henry Huntington bought his land in San Marino and this was merely a farm.

Theme Day: Postcard-Worthy
You may be aware that the first of the month is Theme Day around the City Daily Photo world. Today's theme is "postcard-worthy." I think this eastward view of the San Gabriel Mountains from the lookout at Mount Wilson lives up to the theme.
If you've stopped in for your Monday Zen, never fear: we'll have one of our rare Zen Tuesdays tomorrow.
City Daily Photo is now 1408 blogs strong; the newest is Guatemala Daily Photo.
Wish you were here!

Theme Day: The color green
I admit this one had me stumped.
Pasadena just doesn't have much green. We have other things, like hiking trails...
...famous bridges...
...and the occasional spot to sit and enjoy it all.
But there's not a whole lot of green.
We have other colors, of course.
Orange, for example...
...red...
...pink...
...and even bleu.
But I don't see a lot of green around here.
Wait.
There is one thing. One Pasadena thing that's green.
Our street signs.
Whew.

Theme Day: Under Construction
A few years ago, the eyesore at the corner of Washington and El Molino was a problem liquor store that plagued the neighborhood. This photo is almost exactly two years old.
Now, thanks to Joel Bryant and Trademark Development Group, it's about to become the Classics at Washington Park, a group of eight craftsman-inspired townhomes.
From the website: "Four of the homes will be marketed and sold at prevailing market rate prices. The remaining four homes will be reserved for moderate-income homebuyers."
I think this tells you a lot about the neighborhood.
Bryant lives in the neighborhood. So do I. We both want what's best for the area and, after he showed me around the site yesterday, I can say he and I are definitely on the same page.

Theme Day: Mailbox
Today's City Daily Photo theme is "Mailbox," which can be interpreted in more imaginative ways than I came up with. That's okay, the homeowners here did the interpreting for me. I love their slightly twisted, "approved by the postmaster general" U.S. mailbox.
I wonder what they're commenting on, exactly. Not that I want to know. Right about now, this could mean anything.
There are now 1381 City Daily Photo blogs, the newest being Positano, Italy. Check out how other City Daily Photo bloggers interpreted today's theme.
