Concrete Thoughts

I always wanted to do this, Charleston, S.C.

I still have the best collection of sidewalk graffiti but check out this Awesome Wet Cement tumblr and send in your own. They haven't found all of mine yet ;).

In other news, I now have the International Film Channel and may never need to leave this room again.

Funny Hahah

Smile! Charleston, S.C.

I don't do much on Google + but I check in once and a while to see what is going on and always get a laugh from the one liners by Jonco Stl.  He always seems to come up with one I haven't heard before and cracks me up. Here are a few of his recent ones. If you are on Google+, I'd add him to your circles for a daily smile.

I'm convinced the new girl I'm seeing is a transvestite.
I can feel it.

My doctor just said, "Nobody has ever died from a migraine."
So I killed him..

I thought I saw a guy wearing camouflage.
I didn't.

My girlfriend wanted me to buy her a Siamese cat.
My buddy told me that they are really expensive, so I bought 2 normal cats and glued their heads together.

Just been down the hospital to pick up an X-Ray.
He's called "Rachel" now.

I don't know why I even bother having a smartphone.
It spends so much time on the charger, you might as well call it a landline.

Laser eye surgery, what a waste of money. Two weeks and not a single laser fired from either of my eyes.

I've just finished writing a book called "How to delegate."
Well, actually my wife wrote it.
But it was me who told her to.

My wife left me because of my habit of excessive lying.
She didn't leave me.

I finally managed to sell all my old super hero comics...
I feel marvel less.

I'm being taken to court for plagiarism.
But it's just his word against my word...
which he claims is his word.

I hate condescending people.
But, I wouldn't expect you to understand.

Frodo Baggins does Charleston

Frodo B. Baggins, Coming St., Charleston, S.C.

"Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate;
And though I oft have passed them by,
A day will come at last when I
Shall take the hidden paths that run
West of the Moon, East of the Sun"
Frodo Baggins

Did Frodo have a middle initial?

Politics on the Pavement

Ron Paul, Calhoun St, Charleston, S.C.
Long Live The American Reivolution
I'm a little slow. I wasn't quite sure this was Ron Paul and couldn't quite make out the words until I googled for images and this popped up. I took it during the S.C. primary period so it makes sense. Still - Ron Paul has sidewalk artists working on his campaign? Cool!

In other news, holy traffic confusion kids! It is a mess West Ashley. I soon realized the crawling traffic jam I had entered and slipped into the mall to hang out for a while hoping things would clear up. Drive carefully out there.

Yankees Go Home

Yankees Go Home, Coming St., Charleston, S.C.
It is such a relief to be Canadian. I've never read, "Canadians, go home, eh!" in the pavement. It looks like someone tried to rub this out but it was too late.

Smile!

Vanderhorst St., Charleston, S.C.

Doesn't everyone walk around with a Smiley sticker in their pocket? I have friends who are clowns and always trying to stick Smiley stickers on me. I finally asked for a couple to dot the "i"s in the pavement. Smile!

Bedtime already. I got caught up working on a slideshow for work and the time slipped by. Now I am wide awake.

Self Portrait on North Market

North Market St., Charleston, S.C.

I've been missing in action lately. Whew. It is one of the busiest times of the year for me but things should let up shortly. I am a big American Heart Association supporter and the Lowcountry Heart Walk is this Saturday.  I love the advances that have been made in awareness of ways to prevent and treat heart disease. In the time I've been in healthcare the changes are incredible. I can't help feeling that I am on a winning team. On Saturday I intend to take over 500 people to the walk and by the skin of my teeth we will have raised $40,000.

Yesterday I held a day time silent auction at work. I had no idea how it would work since every auction I've ever been involved in required alcohol to loosen the purse strings. Heheh. We did fine and I set up a table and sold matted prints of some of my photographs. My office looks like a yellow bomb exploded with boxes of walk shirts and people have been handing me money as I walk through the halls. My little head is swimming. I made it to town in time to talk down to the Heart Association on King St. to turn in another cash filled envelope and felt pretty good about it. I am so grateful to the people I work with for making this project so much fun. Go team Pirates!

Here is the link in case anyone is inclined to join the festivities, walk, come take pictures or make a donation. We'd be glad to have you!

Today's photo is fresh off the pavement. There were a couple of chalk drawings but this one lined up perfectly.

I need food.

This is Home

King St., Charleston, S.C.

This is Home. Someone has been spray painting these words all over town. I try my hardest not to glorify vandalism (soooo tempting sometimes) but since this is painted on the pavement it isn't going to damage anything and I can enjoy it. This one is at the end of King almost at the tip of the peninsula.

Here are some lovely This is Home graphics and here is a song of the same title by Switchback:

This is Home

Lyrics by Switchback

Yah this is home, now im finally where I belong

Yea this is home, ive been searching for a place of my own,

Now I found it, maybe this is home

Yes this is home

And now, after all my searching

After all my questions

Im going to call it home

I got a brand new mind set

I can finally see the sunset

Im gonna call it home

Home, this is home

Now Im finally where I belong, belong

Yes this is home,

Ive been searching for a place of my own

Now I found it,

Maybe this is home

This is home

Now I know

Yea this is home

Ive come too far

And I wont go back

Yea this is home

Bella Mafia

St. Philip St., Charleston, S.C.

Who wants to join my Bella Mafia?

I was carrying the flowers home from Harris Teeter and thought they made the perfect touch to the sidewalk inscription.

As the Pavement Turns

Charleston, S.C.

Short stories in the pavement. As Valentine's Day draws closer I can't help wondering.....

Where are they now? Does Scraper still love Fish? Did Dundee do Jock? Does Andrew bring Heidi back to their piece of pavement on anniversaries? Did Barko and Linko settle down and have little Binkos? Are Chan! & Mike! happy forever? Did "Love No One"? find the love of his life?

Luckily I can turn the corner for another episode of "As the Pavement Turns".

Love is.....

Radcliff St., Charleston, S.C.

Love is the magician, the enchanter that changes worthless things to joy.
It is the perfume of that wondrous flower, the heart,
and without that sacred passion, that divine swoon,
we are less than beasts; but with it, earth is heaven, and we are gods.

Under Foot

Those Who Give Up Freedom For Security, Deserve Neither.

You know I did it. I am so fascinated by what people chose to write in wet cement I kept stumbling, tripping tourists and back tracking to take pictures of the pavement in San Francisco.

Good morning, Sunshine!

Pitt St., Charleston, S.C.

Good morning, Sunshine! A cheerful soul lived on Pitt St. and makes me smile every time I cross the pavement scribbles. Years of smiles - that isn't a bad gift to leave behind.

Here is something else I found on Color Me Katie that made me grin this morning. Enjoy!

Concrete Messages

Fielding Home for Funerals, Charleston, S.C.

Oddly, this is what is on the pavement in front of the funeral home.

This is on the pavement on upper King St.

All it means is that I spent way too much time reading the pavement.

Edit: Fielding Home for Funerals:
This facility, originally built in the late 1700s, was, and remains a stately mansion in the center of Charleston’s most celebrated historic district. It had been reduced to a low rent rooming house when Julius P.L. Fielding purchased it in 1928 and restored it to its original character. For two generations, it served as residence and principal location of the Funeral home. After several renovations and additions, including a spacious chapel, it is now a modern funeral establishment, while maintaining its eighteenth century character.

Faith, Truth, Power

Faith, Truth, Power. Not the worst thing you could write in cement.

Sidewalk Curator's Field Trip

SCAD Sidewalk Competition, Forsyth Park, Savannah, G.A.

On occasion your Sidewalk Curator takes a field trip and what could be more important than the annual Sidewalk Arts festival in Savannah? I was much too busy yesterday when the festival took place and it rained over night. So, there. I actually like a few of them better after the rain and the fallen leaf makes the rabbit look like an odd snowman with a carrot nose.

See the winners on the web site. It was raining pretty hard and I didn't have an umbrella. How come we don't have a sidewalk contest?
The Sidewalk Arts Festival: The Savannah College of Art and Design's annual Sidewalk Arts Festival draws thousands of visitors each year to view temporary chalk masterpieces created on the sidewalks of historic Forsyth Park, Savannah, Ga. Participants represent SCAD's many areas of study; different artistic styles are inspired by different cultures, interests and disciplines.

Concrete Thoughts

Vanderhorst St., Charleston, S.C.

I have been sidetracked lately from the fact that one of my primary blogging missions was to document the sidewalk graffiti of Charleston. No worries kids. I have a lifetime supply of treasures. I am endlessly fascinated by what people chose to write in their brief access to wet cement.

Blog Hopping!

Rutledge Ave., Charleston, S.C.

This is a bit of religiously diverse symbolism found in the pavement in front of the Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim temple on Rutledge Ave.

Ooooh......purty necklace. How good have I been?

Charleston Moves says our chairs are our enemies and making us fat. I know I sit in mine too much. I spend my life writing and responding to emails and I have a "people" job. Sad to think I am just going to get fat unless I quit working.

Local blog buddy Heather of Home Ec 101 was on Lowcountry Live. Naturally I was sitting in my chair at work getting fat and missed it but happily someone recorded it. Go Heather!

Hugging the Coast has a ridiculously multi-ingredient recipe for Mulligatawny Soup but think how much fun it is to say Mulligatawny. Mulligatawny. Mulligatawny. Mulligatawny. Makes it all worth it. I had my first bowl of steaming Mulligatawny soup on a foggy evening in the Hotel Windamere on Observatory Hill in Darjeeling.

I definitely have to start getting up earlier or staying up later. Cedar Posts caught this beautiful sunrise. Wow.

Helen Rice of Fuzzco had a successful art show at Hope and Union Coffee Shop. Helen went to school with my kids so I bask in the reflected glory of friends of kid's thing whenever she does something cool. I've been doing a lot of basking.

Caroline Nutall, Publisher of CHARLIE invites everyone to join in to create the largest possible team for the Walk for Water on March 20th. Sign up or make a donation here.

What else is going on?
