I walked the Bogard, Spring, Cannon route this morning and caught up with some of my old favorites. I've photographed this lady's display on Bogard this morning but this time the homeowner was sitting on her porch steps and asked me to bring her back a copy of the pictures. I think I will.

I am watching the heartbreaking memorial service from Newtown, Connecticut on tv. It's hard to watch but impossible to turn away from. What a sad time this is.

Saturday morning walkabout

I like to check on the floral arrangement in the orange traffic cone vase on Bogard. The plastic reptile with the blossom in his mouth is a happy new touch.

I walked the Spring, Bogard, King loop this morning and ran into Byron up around the Piggly Wiggly. I declined the offered chiropractic back treatment but did give him all the change I had. I hadn't seen him for a while and the update is that he is now banned from crossing Calhoun St. anywhere below Spring St. so his traveling area is narrowing.



It is a perfect Charleston day and everyone (everyone but me) gets out to do yard work and home maintenance. This fellow is putting the finishing touches on what looks like a new doughnut store called "Glazed Gourmet Doughnuts". If you like them on Facebook you can suggest a new doughnut flavor. Stores keep closing but new ones replace them just as fast.

Have a good weekend, kids. I am going to a friend's wedding this afternoon.

Fire at Bogard & Rutledge

I can't even imagine waking up to this but luckily someone did wake up and got everyone else out. No one was hurt although I'm sure they lost almost everything. The Post & Courier site has a lot more photos here. Fire is always a worry with these old wooden houses.

Best "Use of an Empty Lot" award goes to the lush and colorful Bogarden Community Garden. I took photos of this experiment last year so nice to see it is still active.

And just like that, Snookies Little Sweet Shop is no longer. Someone is living in a new aqua home in the spot it used to be in.

Hello sunshine! We've had such a stretch of gray and rainy days that today's bright sunshine was like a gift. Suddenly you can believe that spring isn't far away.

I walked the Spring St., Bogard St., Piggly Wiggly stretch this morning and spotted this marker in a vegetable bed in the Bogard St. community garden. Someone was being creative!

Speaking of gardens and farming this event looks worthwhile, affordable and fun:

Orvis Hill Farm Barn Raising: CHARLESTON CHEFS, LOWCOUNTRY LOCAL FIRST AND KEEGAN FARMS RALLY TO SUPPORT LOCAL FARMER
CHARLESTON, S.C. (Jan. 20, 2011) – More than 400 people will fill the lawn of Lowndes Grove Plantation Feb. 20 as Patrick Properties, Lowcountry Local First and Keegan Farms host the Ovis Hill Farms Barn Raising event to benefit farmer Charlie Caldwell of Ovis Hill Farms, who tragically lost his barn and more than 500 of his prized animals in a fire this past December.

Guests at the event will enjoy an oyster roast prepared by Nico Romo of Fish restaurant from 1 to 4 p.m., as well as special dishes from 12 other Charleston chefs: Mike Lata of FIG, Sean Brock of McCrady’s and Husk, Ken Vedrinski of Trattoria Lucca, Frank Lee of S.N.O.B., Jeremiah Bacon of Oak Steakhouse, Craig Deihl of Cypress, Ricky Hacker of Evo, Fred Neuville of Fat Hen, Marc Collins of Circa 1886, Mike Lotz of Triangle Char and Bar, Ben Berryhill of Red Drum and Jacques Larson of Wild Olive. The afternoon will also feature live music by local singer Elise Testone.

Tickets for the event are $50 per person and include all food and entertainment (beer and wine are not included), and free for kids ages 10 and under, in the hopes of raising $20,000 to rebuild the Ovis Hill Farms barn and replace the lost livestock. 100% of the proceeds benefit Ovis Hill Farm!

Curbside Rebicycling

I love the casual recycling that goes on in Charleston. I often leave items on the curb hoping that someone will make good use of them. I peak out of the window pleased to see my belongings go off to their new home.

I smiled this morning when I saw this gentleman on Bogard St. He was trying to take home a floor lamp on his bicycle. At first I was taking pictures discreetly but he caught me laughing at his balancing problem. He asked what I was going to do with the pictures and I said, if it was alright with him, I'd post them this evening. Thanks for being such a good sport Terry, you are the Charleston Daily Photo!

Da Bogarden

Lowcountry Community Gardens: New downtown community garden sprouting. The corner lot of Rutledge and Bogard in downtown Charleston is on the way to becoming Charleston's newest community garden!

How about that, eh? I found a new garden and a new gardening blog. Too late for the neighborhood cookout but I'll check back and see what's growing in a few weeks.

Rambling Tuesdays

I'm feverish, congested, curled up in the corner of my couch and babbling to myself this evening.

The Trattoria Lucca may be a delicious and happy (noisy) treat for Bogard St. but couldn't they have given me the Patio Famous Tea Room sign when they renovated? It was a favorite thing on Bogard along with the little lady with the statue garden and Snookies Little Sweet Shop.

Waldo led me to Matt Alber. Wow.

According to a commenter (thank you) the cool piece of graffiti from Trapman St. wasn't written by an despondent artist in love but is a fragment of a Phish lyric. It isn't quite the same looking at the enlargement on my wall now.
