Intrepid explorer...
This rather imposing looking gentleman was Willem de Vlamingh (About Willem de Vlamingh). Willem (as I like to call him!!) arrived on our shores in 1696 a good hundred years before Captain Cook. He first landed on Rottnest Island, which he named after the many Quokkas (thinking they were large rats) and then on up the river naming it the Swan River after the black swans. I was wondering if, apart from the buildings far in the background and the camera (ooops!!) just behind him, if the scrub behind him was similar to when he landed all those years ago, it does look a bit 1697 ish!!
