Henry Hobson Richardson is the architect of this Romanesque style public library building erected in 1880 for a sum of $20,000 which was provided by the Crane family memorial gift. This building is considered H. H. Richardson’s masterpiece of library design; the original library building will always draw the attention and recognition of art historians, as well as the admiration of ordinary people like myself, who appreciate the power and simplicity of its design whenever I visit it.
